Been trying to get ahold of Peetey about bringing big blue to this event, no luck so far, but I will pick one up and leave it in my truck if needed.
How big a tarp you want. I may have one or may be able to get one from the hardware I manage

Good to know. I'll add myself to the list with Detail Man and his plus one.
I plan on coming in on Thursday after lunch sometime and then heading out on Saturday morning. I'll bring my chili for Friday if anyone wants hot dogs twice.

Peetey wont be able to make it and in the past he has brought "Big Blue" (well at least last year). A blue tarp either 20x20 or 20x30 will work with alot of rope. For the record I have never set one up nor took one down. So I depend on the participants to help with both and I have no interest in learning. That would be a big help, thanks.
Phanton has helped to set up big tarps at the Grayson Hang.
More & more are signing up...don't know if there will be enough trees.... Looking forward to this and my SLOW walk up the trail!

I'm planning to be there too Slugger, just wave at me as you pass me going up the hill :)
(I'll probably be with an alien from Roswell...no wait that's the wrong Roswell, he's from Georgia..) I hope I can get him to carry my pack for me.
The picture has some famous footwear in it. Those thing show up everywhere

Reminder that Kevin and I will have firewood in the beds of our truck so feel FREE (Very FREE) to bring some up.
I guess I'm the "Alien", looking forward to attending and learning more. I have only "elevated my perspective" 3 nights so far. :scared: Let me know if I can bring anything, more hot dogs, wood, etc. Otherwise I'll just bring the comic relief when you see my rookie set-up.
Thanks

Myself, Dragonlady, and Jailbait are going to come out Friday.

Hey Dennis...I'll be using my ULA Catalyst to haul my gear up to the Enchanted Forest, but will bring an older 40L & leave it in my Jeep. Once I haul myself up the trail and get my gear set up (and take a long breather), I'll make another trip back to the parking lot & get some wood into that extra 40L pack & haul a load up. During the weekend, I'll leave that 40L available so anyone can grab it to go get another load. Easier on the shoulders, back & arms to carry it that way.
Also, that will give me the opportunity to pass GroundHog twice going uphill!
I’m willing to grab the 40L pack and make a full haul of wood back to the hang site after setting up camp. Hope to be there Friday before dinner time if I can get off work early (~2.5 hr drive for me). If anyone is game for a longer day hike on Saturday I may do Butter Gap/Cat Gap loop for ~9.5 miles or hop in the car and hit another nearby loop. Some nice accessible waterfall loops in DuPont State Forest or Gorges State Park.
I hope to get up that way on Thursday afternoon and will be glad to haul some firewood up to the campsite. I am sure I will be makeing a trip or two back to the parking lot over the weekend. My buddy Andy is hoping to make it out for a night or two as well. He has borrowed hammock gear from me a few times this year, but this would be his first trip with all of his new setup (thanks to Warbonnet's awesome sale recently).
I would be up for the hike on Saturday, but will be making a detour up Cedar Rock Mtn to hang out for a while and do some ham radio. There are some good views from up there, but it is a steep, but short, climb from the ALT. It would be nice to share the trail with you up to Cedar Rock at least and I fully understand if someone doesn't want to hang out while I fart around on a radio.
On Friday I am planning to hike up to Chestnut Knob on the ALT (yep, more ham radio) and heading over John Rock on the way back to camp. Either going back counter-clockwise by the fish hatchery (maybe a beer run by the truck?) or clockwise back up and on the Cat Gap connector trail. If anyone is interested in stretching their legs and joining me, they would be most welcome.

Thanks for the CalTopo bookmark. Happy to have the company and check out your radio kit on Cedar Rock. I skirted it on the ALT last month when completing the NOBO route. I don’t have a specific route/destination in mind this time which makes for flexible day hike. Also wouldn’t be opposed to the potential for a beer run Friday if I can head up to Brevard earlier in the day.
Cool! Definitely SOTA activations - W4C/CM-081 - Cedar Rock Mtn & W4C/CM-094 - Chestnut Knob. I was planning to bring my tiny CW only radio, but can always bring my KX2 instead for more bands and voice capability if you are interested/available.
I have always gone up Cedar rock from Sandy Gap on the east side, but a friend recently came back down to the ALT via the southern ridge line and I am interested in ascending from that side. From what I recall it sounded like a decent manway. I will double-check the details with him and we can always see what it looks like from the ALT. It probably looks like a jungle this time of year.
Definitely appreciate the help of bringing firewood, last year we left a lot behind, but better to have too much. Also if none posts about bringing a big blue tarp I can pick one up with plenty of rope, might need help getting that to camp also and definitely bringing it down.
I have two tarps I can bring along with some para cord. One is 12'x16' and the other one is bigger (not sure size but bigger and heavier) However, I want to be clear that they're not some high dollar tarps, just simple silver rain tarps with grommets. Not sure what you seasoned Hangers are used to and don't want to let ya'll down.
Otherwise I'm concerned about all this hiking chatter. Is there an opportunity for a fat ol' guy just to sit around, learn about hammocks, drink a beer and smoke a cigar?

Please don't haul extra weight on my account. I haven't been very active in a few years but I've often thought about bringing the Rockmite out on a trip with me. I'd be very curious to see your antenna setup for backpacking though!
I sure hope so!Quote:

This gave me a good laugh. I plan to do some hanging out too which I believe is the general point of a group "hang". Just can't personally pass up the opportunity to experience some Pisgah trails with a light day pack instead of my full backpacking kit. I also have an extra nylon tarp with grommets that I can bring along. Not sure how much paracord I have laying around but will bring what I have.
@smkymts @jb_outdoors,
I have a place on Bearwallow Mountain and often using repeaters 146.64 and Greenville's 146.61. Wonder if we've ever connected, K4EHD here. I'm a rookie at Ham as well and only using an HT for now. Perhaps in addition to picking up more hammock knowledge I can pick up some hamming from ya'll. Looks to be an educational hang for me.

I sold off most of my gear to help finance my move back to WNC from Florida. Waiting until we have a proper house with some property for antennas before investing in the hobby again, but I've got an HT I can bring along to futz around with. When I was active I primarily did VHF packet and HF CW (NC4JB btw). I'm keen to get into SOTA now that we're back in the mountains but I need some backpacking antenna ideas and I'm hoping smkymts has some thoughts in that domain :)
Looks like I'll be getting in sometime Saturday morning. Happy to help carry anything from the parking lot and setup/take down tarps. I've got a very cheap 9x10 tarp I can bring if that helps at all.
If someone is going up Thursday and will be near Mt Pleasant Hardware. I will send a 20x30 up. I plan on coming up Friday debating Thursday after work but not sure about that.
Just let me know if you plan to pick it up

I've never done SOTA as I have an old boat anchor (Kenwood TS-820S from the 70's) and an Icom 7300. Not exactly portable. I did operate a couple years ago during a group hang at Medoc Mtn with my 7300 and a 12V battery and it was fun (myself and AA2FD) - but that was car camping - not backpacking!
Far as I know me and ponyo will making hike up
