We were not that far from the Pisgah Campground on the Blue Ridge Parkway which has been know to have bears getting into campers food and gear since at least the 60's. When I was a kid early 60's, my parents took us camping there and a bear got into our ice chest and took our food. Never saw the bear but we could hear it.
If Brevard or Pisgah National Forest is on anyone's list for the upcoming weeks, Hwy 276 in Pisgah National Forest is closed. You can not access it from Blue Ridge Parkway or Brevard. All trails in PNF are also closed. There is significant damage to roads, trails, bridges, and overlooks. Popular trails in the area include Looking glass falls, looking glass rock, John's rock, Moores cove falls, sliding rock, coontree. All are closed and are not accessible from any point.
USGS recorded the highest water EVER in PNF yesterday and the damage it has caused is absolutely devastating. Just putting this out here hopefully they have it cleared up before next year
For anyone that might be putting off buying a bear canister (like me) REI has the BearVault brand on sale for a pretty good price.
