After reading this thread I was in my walmart last night and they had the sawyer spray bottle. It was 9.88 and said it would treat a tent or one full outfit including socks. I think it was a 8 or 10 oz bottle. Is that a ok price compared to the tractor supply stuff?
I just bought the same thing at the local walley world. $9.88 for 12 oz spray bottle. bonus no sales tax :-)
The concentrate from Tractor Supply will treat many times more clothing than the Sawyers kit for the price. You just need to decide for yourself if you're comfortable using the TS product in this way. After much analysis, I think it's safe, when properly diluted, but you are applying a pesticide in a non approved manner.
Ok thanks for the info. I will have to stop by tractor supply. I found a tick on me about a week ago and it had been there a week or so. It was on my back and i thought it was just a mole. My wife pulled it out and i have been worried ever since. I am going to treat all my stuff now.
The military soak kit is an Emulsifiable Concentrate of 40% Permethrin, petroleum distillates, and emulsifiers. The instructions have you dilute it to a 0.78% concentration. It's made by Sawyer. The consumer version is pre-diluted to a 0.5% concentration.
Gordon's Permethrin 10 available at Tractor Supply is an Emulsifiable Concentrate of 10% Permethrin, petroleum distillates, and emulsifiers. To replicate the military soak kit mix 36ml of Gordon's with 423ml water.
Put the mixture in a ziplock baggie with the item you are treating, let it soak for 3 hours, then hang it up to dry.
I wonder why the military kits haven't found their way into the civilian market.
