Hello from Hayward
Maybe we Cali hangers should organize a hang somewhere...? Say... Mendocino/Fort Bragg area? Maybe Shasta? I don't really know any good places in SOCAL :P . Just seems like all the good hangs take place back east somewhere.
Ooh! Clear Lake is a beautiful place :3
Well, that is a neat idea Carson. Perhaps somewhere in Central Cali? Fresno is pretty darn Central - maybe in the lower Sierras around Shaver Lake? Along the coast, Big Sur is the most Central place... Both places sure are beautiful!!
I have been in the Fresno area only once when I was 12 for a youth camp (We stayed in big cabins near a place called Jackass Rock). As I recall, it was quite pleasant even in July and the trees were just a little bigger than a stock HH tree hugger.
I've not been to the other two places, but I do like mountains ;) .
Welcome to HF Carson!
The DIY route can be cheaper if you find the right materials for the right price and don't factor in the time involved. DIY stuff is ideal for custom equipment with features not found on the market or for the satisfaction of making and using your own stuff.
You can always get by using stuff you already own (sleeping pad, sleeping bag) for insulation while either waiting for the right price on the materials you want (sometimes sales come up) or saving up for the equipment you wish to buy already made. The important part is to get outside and enjoy yourself, and to post trip reports of your adventures on this forums for me ...eh hem.. I mean us to read.
