When I was living out in Oregon, 2 years ago, I traveled with a pair of 12 foot straps.
This first picture is showing that 12 feet was not quite enough for some trees.:)

This second is another tree where I used both 12 foot straps tied together to get a 24 foot strap which was just barely long enough.

These days I am in south Texas and six foot straps are long enough for most areas.

P.S. These are Old Growth Douglas Firs. Not even Sequoias. Unfortunately 95% of these old trees have been logged.
Those forests sure must have been something a 100 yr. ago.

I have 10' straps and needed every inch of them hanging in Yosemite.
-
Two 6 foot straps and a single 4 foot gives me the most options with a nominal weight penalty.
-
I have 2, 88" or 7.3' ers and some times don't even use them.
-
Here in my part of the country there is not a lot of old growth large trees so 6 footers work fine everywhere I go. Most of the time I could easily get by with 4 footers but I'm not a gram counter so I carry the 6'ers.
-
So far in NC, I haven't found the need for anything bigger than 6ft.

I use 12' straps. One day I hope to connect them via carabiners, around a single Giant Sequoia and hang in the hammock on the side of a single tree. Uncomfortable for sleeping, but whatta cool picture! :)

Many thanks to everyone for sharing and providing your thinking on this. It is a great collection of info that I hope will also help others in the future.
For my part, and after hearing everyone's reasoning and methods, I am sticking with my 7 footers but will also carry an extra loop of amsteel.

5' here! Whenever I needed more, I take a piece of Amsteel line with two fixed eyes and make up the differance.
Generally when I do have to use them, it's only about 6-8" of the line that actually touches the tree and it's on the part that comes towards the whoopie sling.;):D

I've got 5, 7 and most recently 10 foot, I just switched to an adjustable buckle so I'll probably only carry the 10' from now on. I don't like to come up short with a strap when I'm tired and wet and looking to set up. And really what's an few extra ounces to make setup faster and easier?
