one thing to be aware of is the distinction between have a display that will give out grams when asked, and having a scale that is accurate to one gram or better. Looking at the $20 models it seems pretty uniform that those scales are accurate to 0.1 oz at best. There are about 3 grams to 0.1 oz.
The My Weight iBalance 2500g is accurate to 0.5 gram, weighs up to 2500 grams (a little over 5 lbs), and can be gotten for $40 shipped from ebay.
0.1 oz accuracy is entirely accurate enough for most every thing we do here. But if you're a purist (***looks around, "who me??" ***) 0.5g accuracy for $40 looks like a good deal.
Grizz
I just won this one.

Same here. .1 of an oz., whole grams. 5 lbs., 30 bucks. Gets the readings about 2% low. You can check with new, clean nickels or quarters. Nickels are 5.000 grams, so 20 is 100.000 grams or close. Mine said 20 was 98 grams, therefore the 2% underweight. Your scale WILL vary, so check it!
As long as it's consistent, I'm not going to worry about it. (Unless there's some sort of equipment weighing competition I don't know about that I'll need to train for...)
It's part of the secret so.....Oh I've said to much!
ha! I thought so!
I use the Good Cook brand kitchen scale from Walmart. One-button switches between grams and ounces, accurate to +/- 2 g or 1/8 oz, 5 lbs capacity. Nothing I make is over 5 lbs, and for total pack weight (~20 lbs) I don't need more accuracy than my bathroom scale. Cost was about $20, IIRC.
DETECTO - made right here in the USA.
OK I'm prejudiced - I work for them! :D
They are excellent scales - but pricey, mostly for restaurant / institutional use.
