back up the figure 9 with a slipper half hitch?
+1 on questioning a slippery half hitch behind the figure 9. If you are tying knots, why not just tie a slippery half hitch on the standing line and forgo the weight of the figure 9
or tie a prussik on the standing line, run the end of the line around the tree and back through the prussik, tie your slippery half hitch behind the prussik and adjust the prussik for desired taughtness
or tie a standing loop on the line with an inline figure 8 or inline overhand knot or marlinspike and run the end around the tree and back through the loop made by the figure 8 or overhand knot and rake down and tie your slippery half hitch behind that (powercinch).
Basically, what is the advantage of carrying a Figure 9 if you need to back it up with a knot.
No worries Dave and no apologies needed :D. Always happy to help a fellow hanger out. Especially if he's going to be sleeping next to me in the woods for a week :scared: I was actually going to PM Cranky Bear and tell him I won a set cause we've been getting together lately to do shakedowns at my place and some hammock testing in my back yard as well. Its just as fun seeing and playing with some one else's gear as it is mine, although it makes me want to buy more.
However (sorry Cranky not trying to dis the spirit of HF I promise) but first need to do some testing to figure out if I am going to use a CRL on my Cuben Fiber tarp (which I have not yet gotten). I heard a CRL makes the RL of a cuben tarp bow substantially and that two tie outs work much better. Is this true? Also with two tieouts do people have figure 9's on both sides or just one? (sorry that's an off topic question kinda rhetorical kinda not looks like a new thread topic) Cranky if I end up using a CRL on my cuben tarp and only have one tie out I got an xtra Tarp Flyz for ya too have, if not, well talk and work something out I promise .
And Cranky Bear, why use such a thin line, wouldn't it be easier to use a 2.2 mm line and 1.75 as prussic knot to tension the tarp any ways. You mention going back to your original line what were you using before and why you switch? Or is this the line you use cause you have it, like it and don't want to buy more? If your interested in ordering some 2.2 or 1.75 line from Paul and we can order together and save on shipping. I find that the larger diameter cord is easier to untangle and deal with any ways.
That turned into a much longer post then intended
LRR
And Cranky Just saw your post but because your not that kinda guy is exactly the reason that if I got an xtra one it's yours, just want to see if I can do a two tie out RL on my tarp with only one Tarp Flyz???
Put a prusik on the tree ends and attach a mini-biner to the prusik loop. Then wrap around the tree and clip biner over the line, then just adjust at the prusik. My best idea :)
I currently use a pre-made CRL from whoopieslings, I also have some 1.75 utility from Paul at AHE! I am getting a spinn tarp (hopefully soon...........) and in the spirit of trying to lighten up but keep it simple (like I currently use) biner on one side and a figure 9 on the other, my tarp set-up is soooooooooo simple and easy for me as it stands now and was hoping to keep it that way on the new one! I contacted Joe at Z-Packs and asked for a small sample of the 1.25mm line and I really like it, but I wanted to make sure I could tension it just like my current set-up, well, the line is way too small for the figure 9's, hence the thread!
Now I went out to Western Marine today to see if I could find a suitable replacement, well, I found something that might work, but I have to wait till my line order come's in to try it out! Here is the possible solution: http://www.westmarine.com/webapp/wcs...classNum=10241
Thanks for the help everyone, keep the ideas coming!
I'm not 100% sure how it works, but in some searching I found that the guys on backpackinglight like to use micro clam cleats made for sailing. You might take a look at these at West Marine too. They were claiming to use them on mason line and 1mm line with no problems. Here is a picture of one.

EDIT: It looks like these work just like the micro tensioners I linked to earlier. But I was thinking about this too. If you reverse the position of the micro tensioner, and left it on the line coming from the tarp running through it, then wrapped your line around the tree, and attached it to the micro tensioner with a tiny s-biner or hook of some sort through the hole where you would normally have the knotted rope, then you could pull the micro tensioner towards the tarp to tension it, and never have to tie a knot.
If the problem is the line cutting into your fingers, then that can be solved easily using a small stick and a loop or marlin spike knot.
The stick only needs to be about 1/8" or 1/4" in diameter. Slip into the prussic loop or tie a marlin spike with the stick and you have an instant handle to prevent the line cutting your fingers. If I recall what I read about the marlin spike, it was invented for the very problem of getting a good grip on rope.
We use a truckers hitch arrangement using 3 prussics on our tarp ridge lines and use the small stick to get the line really tight. Saves cutting the fingers.
