The only difficulties I've had with the marlinspike were either:
- The Whoopie sling got wedged in the knot and took more pull to get it off, or
- The knot got a little tight and the toggle took a stronger pull to get out. (Usually when I do something foolish, like use an S-hook as the toggle, cause I think I'm being clever by hooking the hammock directly to the tree straps)
I've never had a problem with the knot coming undone once the toggle was out, since as far as I know, the toggle's the only thing holding the knot together.
Any chance you can post pictures or a short video of how you're tying the marlinspike in the first place?
What kind of straps are you using.... cause I got some 1 1/2 in. straps from sclittlefield and they are much more difficult to pull the knot out than the 1 in. straps from harbor freight...
I have found this too, and I use pieces of the original WBBB strap suspension as tree straps. I have been using trail sticks, and they've also been hard to slide out. I think I may be overtightening the knot against the toggle, though.
I also popped the whoopie off of it last weekend while I was adjusting my uq. So now, I loop the whoopie over the toggle and knot and tie a slip hitch behind it to keep it nice and snug up against the knot.
I use Tree Huggers from the Whoopie Sling site and they are really easy to pull out I think because they are so soft. But last weekend I used my cam straps from my car (which are very stiff and new) that I tie on boats with and they were really difficult to yank out! The material that the straps are made of makes a certainly difference.
I use 1" seat belt straps that are really stiff and have never had this problem. Not a single hickup with the whoopie to MSH knot. I use arrow shaft toggles and a Ti stake before and the knot comes out the instant i pull the toggle
