Headlamp. If I'm feeling frisky I have a Black Diamond Orbit lantern I got as a gift.
I also have a black diamond orbit lantern.
I use one of the little LED lights I bought from Dutch to read by, and a glo-stick for ambient light.
I used one of these for awhile, as I already had it laying around the house. Costs $1, has plenty of light, clips to your ridgeline, and the battery lasts pretty much forever (I've got at least 30 hours on mine so far)
I use my fenix pd20 light with the diffuser tip on it... It's my every where light, 15 lumens is the most used and with a simple twist I get 180 lumens out the front... 15 lumens to me is great for.this although a bit bright at 3am -_o ... It gives a walking amount of light to about 20' or ten foot out the front when I hang it from my chest strap... It hangs light down so you can just hook it straight to ridgeline or I use a prussic loop to keep it in the same spot...
I bought a bunch of these and put them all over the place, truck, EDC, pack, keychain, mom's keychain, ridgeline, FAK, etc.... Insanely bright for its size. A buddy used one clipped to hit baseball cap bill as a headlamp last time were out in the woods because he forgot his...he ended up ordering a dozen when we got back from the trip lol.

I use a Mammut headlamp with the ambient light accessory http://www.rei.com/product/799384/ma...ight-accessory
Might want two sources - use something like the Nite Ize or glowstick for ambient light and use a headlamp for detail work/reading, etc.
May not need both on at same time; but for me, having the choices are worthwhile.
PS: hikelight.com sells the Photon Freedom Micro Light. Tiny and bright for detail work or night strolls. Clips onto hat, pocket, ridgeline, etc
