Ed Speer sewed the loops in the webbing I got from him, too. I just told him what I wanted and I got it the next week (after ordering at the hangout).
I do is what you describe as coiling it like a climbing rope. Coil it, save 1.5 - 2 feet to wrap it, then tuck the end into a coil and tighten it down by pulling (from the other side of the wrapping) that coil down into the wrapping. Done once neatly it stays put quite a while.
I switched out for the ascender knot today. I know have it on the ridgeline to the ring and the hammock support line to the ring. It is a lot easier to use. It does not tighten up and make the rings hard to use.
I noticed another thing with the rings today. I think that the tighter your knots are the tighter the rings are together, of course. The effect of tighter knots seemed to be little or no slippage of the webbing. I noticed slipping from the loose knots but not the tight ones.
This might explain why some people swear they always need a slip knot, and others don't use why it's needed.
HE: which know is the tight one, and which the loose one that lets the slippage happen? Are you getting more or less slippage with the ascender?
What you describe with the ascender knot is why many of us went to using them rather than prusik's for climbing. They slip easier when you want them to slip, and hold well when weight is put on them. You just need to know that it is easier to make them move accidently when not under a lot of weight. Of course, this isn't the life and death issue with the way you are using them that it is in a verticle caving climbing rig :). For this application, it seems that it would work well where folks have been using the prusik.
The anchor hitch I was using made the rings tight, the ascender knot allowed me to tie them a little looser. I may have been able to do this with the anchor hitch, but I like the ascender knot better.
I will have to say I am no expert with knots, I just fake my way through it like everythig else I do.
hey everyone, i'm curious if any one has weighed their suspensions? whats your total suspension weight? webbing, rope if any, and hardware, and what is the total length, and what type of webbing and hardware.
