I like that idea, makes planning easier!
Plan to be somewhere in the dirt (or snow) on Feb 16 & 17. I'll keep an eye on the thread. I have a cold weather "comfort zone" with the hammock. If temps fall below, I may be on the ground.
So short notice but a small group of us will be at camp site c at zaleski tomorrow late afternoon for an overnight if anyone is interested.
Work tomorrow or i would be there!
Flying lessons on Friday afternoon and Saturday mid day. I'm close to getting my instrument rating. When that is done, my schedule will free up a bit.
As it turns out, I now have the 24-27 off. Depending on what the Missus wants to do, I may be out for a longer trip than I thought!
I'll be there somewhere around 4ish Friday evening Jan 25th at spot 9.
I'll be bringing dutch oven potato cheddar chowder, enough for everyone.
Indiana crew will be in sometime Friday night. Are we still doing a group meal?
I'm not impressed with the weather forecast thus far. High 43 low of 27, what is this October?. I hope these numbers start to drop. I'd really like to test my new gear. Pulk and microspikes aren't gonna do much good in 40* weather.
I plan on attending but no potluck for me. I have been following a strict plant based whole food diet to lower my colesterol. I plan on fri and sat nights. See you all then.
I'm in for Site 9. I'll bring the pie irons, pizza filling, and the pie filling just like last year. Possibly some scrapple too, if we don't eat it all at Mount Rogers :D
I'll come in Friday night, after work. It's about an hour for me, so probably around 7:00. Since it's an easy walk, I don't mind carrying some extra stuff at night.
Last year, we had a good enough snow overnight that the pizza sauce bottles we left near the fire to keep thawed got covered in snow. Someone stepped on one and it burst. I though someone sacrificed a squirrel.
My pulk is done, so here's hoping for some snow!
Woo hoo, 1more week! What so we still want for the pot luck? My wife and i are planning on packing in from the trail head i think.
I am going to whip up some sort of casserole type deal with whatever I can find in the cupboard, put it in a foil pan to throw on the fire. So far the weather is looking chilly, but without precipitation. A little snow would be nice....
Agree, the weather is taking a turn for the "better". With some luck the snow earlier in the week will stick around. But overall it's looking good. I'm going to rock the new pulk with or without. I'll be flying solo and should arrive at the main trail head sometime Friday afternoon.
I'll be bringing some of my wife's super awesometastic chili for your dining pleasure.
Ps. I'm so siked, can't wait to get out in the woods and relax with some good friends old and new.
Yes, I remember the pizza sauce incident well. That was pretty funny.
I'm getting set to be up there on Friday night, I may bring some group feed item, maybe some Ray Ray's. Definately would like to have some snow as well.
Plan to walk in from the family camp ground on St Rt. 3 along the river trail.
David
How far is the hike in from the trail head parking area to camp site 9?
849 Township Highway 3006
Perrysville, OH 44864
The closest parking is within a 10 min. walk of the campsite 9. But go first to the forest service office and fill out a registration so you have a slip in your windshield at the parking area. The ranger is a stickler.
I'm needing a little bit of a hike so I'm coming in from Rt. 3 which would be a mile and a half or so along the river.
David
Change of plans for me. I'll be there lunchtime on Saturday.
Hope we get some snow too.
Luke and I are back from Grayson Highlands. The pulk worked swimmingly. I'm still planning on coming out on Friday evening. I haven't quite decided what I'm doing for the pot luck yet...maybe a pot-o-somthing stew.
If....and it's a big "If" I can make this hang, I'm not sure what I'll bring with me, as I won't be coming from my house, I'll be taking care of my mom after her back surgery starting tomorrow morning. Perhaps I can just pick up some pop on the way out of town? Is that ok with everyone, or can you all think of something else? Or bowls and paper products...but that would make it hard for you all if your counting on bowls and I'm not able to be there. Feed back would be appreciated. I'll probably have a better idea of things on my end and if I can get away by Wednesday or Thursday.
Thinking about trying to get there since my Mt. Rogers trip turned into an overnight. It would be Saturday, though. Is the potluck on Friday or Saturday night? Definitely going to keep this in mind.
The potluck is Friday, I believe, but I'm coming in on Saturday and bringing group feed so I'd say there will be a steady stream of food all weekend :)
I was going to prepare my chili on Saturday, but friday works for me. If I get there in time.
Well, actually, I don't think it's going to work out after all. Still trying to get organized and dry/clean my gear. Also, my son's Cub Scout Pinewood Derby is Saturday and I'd have to leave after that was over, so it would be Saturday late afternoon at the earliest. At 3 1/2 hours to get there, it makes a lot of driving for a very short overnight. I'll just try to catch the next one. You all have fun up there! :)
Okay guys, I'm totally taking back my hike in plans for this weekend. I went up today and hiked in on the Hemlock trail then tried to pop up out of the gorge to site 9. Definately not happening. Later I did get up on the North Rim trail for a while and tried to get my bearings but I ran out of time because I wanted to get back out in time to call my safety contact person. I did get in 5 or 6 miles of hiking in some pretty nippy weather. What I got confused on was the bike path on the top of the gorge, wasn't sure if it was part of the North Rim Trail or not. I've got some other maps to consult maybe I can figure it out. In short there are only a couple of places where it's even possible to climb up out of the gorge without gear.
Ive decided to just hike in from the parking lot like I always do and enjoy some group feed and good company. Let's hope for some good ole Ohio winter weather. :)

Thanks for the scouting intel Dave.
Hope you avoided the pile-up on 71 Dave.
Thanks for the Intel. What time is the potluck kicking off on Friday? We are thinking we can come Friday afternoon/evening. Doesn't sound like dessert had been discussed?
Thanks for the response HomeMadeHiker.......but it appears I was having pipe dreams. She isn't even released from the hospital yet, and through these past couple of days, I've come to the shocking, emotional realization that my dad's dementia has really progressed fast, so when I finally get to take her back to her home, I'll have my hands full with both of them. I've been trying to mentally hide from that part of my dad's world/mind....however; I guess it's time to pull my head out of my butt, stop excusing it, and regretfully face it. :(
I miss all of you!!! Have a great time, I hope it snows, and you all get to test your cold weather gear. I'm probably going to try mid February to hit this area again because it's so close to the ski lodge, and I don't want to completely miss "Winter". Hopefully some of you could head out again then.
Diva, sounds like many of us are dealing with our own set of challenges.
We'll be thinking of you and Gutter around the fire.
Still fresh from the fantastic potluck fest at MRHO.. nothing says yummy quite like "Spotted **** & Braised Fabio". :boggle: I guess you had to be there. Enjoy the weekend!
Getting excited!!! One more class, half day at work tommorow and I'm off to the piney woods, hooray!!! It's been too dern long. Can't wait to chillout (pun intended) some good friends old and new.
Looks like "light snow" (whatever that means) starting in the am and continue throughout the day.
Sounds like what they said last year and we about died on Hwy30 (thrice!!!) and arrived to the site at midnight. This year however, I'll be starting early in hopes of avoiding any near death experiences and get a good night's sleep, not to mention the potluct. Wish me luck.
Regardless of the possible road dangers, I'm totally siked at the possibility of snow.
Hey guys -not sure if this is the same place but I am leaving to go to site 9 at Mohican in the morning to meet a large group from BCUSA who are already there till Sunday.i don't know too much as the guy I'm picking up (we are coming from Ontario)has the details but sounds pretty close to the same
We've had to go to site 10 before when 9 was occupied. But 9 is really huge, maybe the BCUSA group will be friendly and indulge a few hangers. We can setup on spots that aren't really suitable for tents.
I remember the January hang last year at site 9 when we got all that snow, we were so spread out that Slo and I actually had a bit of difficulty finding our hammocks coming back from the fire, I'm sure others probably did as well.
David
All I know is I am going to Loudenville (spelling?) Ohio to Mohican site 9.like I said I'm a foreigner there so don't know much but there will be 28-30 guys there they say spread out around the area.half of them got there today and the rest will be coming tomorrow.i just saw this and thought I better say something
