Here is the end of my hammock if that helps matters at all. Attachment 49768
DD says that I just tie those two bits of webbing around a tree "like tying my shoes"...this just doesn't sound like a good idea. So can I take those webbing pieces out and put tree huggers in?
Maybe this Video will help you. There you can see a modification on the suspension that will stop the rain coming down the webbing and soaking your hammock. It also explains how to set up the hammock:

Closer look at the carabiner MOD:
How to make the carabiner MOD:
Natural Bushcraft - Hammock Carabiner Mod
Whoopie Slings on the hammock. Then Dutch Buckles on the Tree Huggers. No Knots or Biners. Easy Peasy.
I would also recommend the Whoopiesling All-In-One-System and some climbing carabiners, if you don't want to make knots.
(Thats the way I set up my hammock, too.)
But if you don't want to (or are not able to) spent the money for the whoopies, the method with the carabiner mod would be cheap and (I think) easy too.
Here you can see the Whoopiesling All-In-One-System installed on a Clark NX250
