It gives them a documented agreement if there are issues with the sale. It also give potential sellers or buyers a place to compare what similar items have sold for.

Attroll, the reason that people like having the posts around,
is that it gives them a good reference for what the previous items
sold for. This is why they like the sales amount to be left in thread.
This gives the person selling it a frame of reference of what to list
their item as, and it also lets the person buying know that they are
getting a good deal.
I understand the desire to leave the sales price on the thread, but it must
be understood that there could be PMs, and that might not even be the
sales price.
I don't know if having a SOLD section would create more or less work for
the moderators. I want to assume that it would create less, but I am
unsure of this. The main benefit that I would see, is that our For Sale
forum would be more concise, and searches in said forum would only
return items still for sale (optimally).
As it sits now, if someone does a simple search for "hammock", it would
return all threads, and if the title has not been modified (as it happens often),
then the searcher would need to peruse all the threads to find the current for sale.
For what it is worth, we are discussing the need for such a "Sold Items" forum. We will get back to everyone and post our reply when the discussions have been concluded.
In the mean time, Happy Hanging!
Exactly my point Ewker... if you search For Sale for WBBB,
you come up with something like 18 threads on the first page that
have not been listed as "Sold". We would be saving our members
time if we had it narrowed down to threads that were still for sale.
Granted, I didn't open up all 18 threads to see which were still
for sale, because thats a pain ..... which is the same pain that our
members shouldn't need to do.
I do think that the for sale forum is "fine" how it is,
so whatever the mods decide will work
so you get 18 threads of the Blackbird that hasn't been sold. You still need to see what is being listed on each one as it could be different. One could be offering a different suspension, may be offering a sock from Arrowhead along with it, it could have a rip in the netting. Lots of reasons that you need to check out each post. If you have a sale and sold section then you have to check both sections. Twice as much work for the members looking to buy or sale  ;)
I check the sold forum (if i'm flush with cash) a couple times a day. I just change the sort to thread start time / decending and I see the latest stuff to hit the list. That's just me. YMMV :shades:
