How high do you hang?
This fun thought just entered my head after I watched one of Shugs videos.
What height do you prefer to hang at? (post stretch, lets call it sleeping height)
I suppose that it depends a lot on the style of hammock that you use, but I seem to use the same height on my HH as I did on my cheapo mesh hammock.
I setup my hammock so that the bottom is about the same height as my belly-button. As I enter and 'unfold' the material the entry slit is just below my bum and entry is very simple. I prefer the idea of being able to transition to standing without needing to 'stand-up'.
On several of the videos I have watched I see many people who hang so low that the hammock is less then 12" when they are in it. This odd position requires a 'knees above ears' attempt to get out of bed in the morning. It looks to me like it would be easier roll-over and stand-up.
I understand the desire to have a short fall of a few inches vs a few feet, but is fear of falling the only reason?
Nope! I'd bet a small wager that those who hang very low are also morning coffee drinkers. Just easier to make coffee/hot chocolate when all you have to do is reach out and get the ol stove goin! While still under one's quilts, of course. :D

- There is no comfort-benefit from hanging higher.
- It is less of a fall in case of suspension failure.
- It is easier to reach out for items placed under the hammock when lower (morning stove for coffee/tea).
I tend to hang about 10" off the ground. It's so that I can sit comfortably and still get my feet into my shoes on the ground. My hammock is a DIY gathered end hammock though, so it'll be different than for a HH.
I generally hang my HH about butt level before I get in. However I may have to have the zipper mod done and start to hang lower since I moved to my home sleeper. It's a top loader with no net and my dog has gotten used to being able nuzzle me in the middle of the night. I tend to like to swing while I am going to sleep so I'll reach out and use the dog as a push point. Dog is happy I am happy.. But in the HH he won't be happy and I won't be able to swing because of the tieouts. So... we'll see.
Ditto to angrysparrow. Like him I see no advantage of hanging higher than 1 foot or 2.
Hmmm, I never really think about it. I just string it up and however high it is thats how I sleep.
In ideal conditions, I try to hang just about high enough to pivot out and put on my shoes.. My hammock is best served as a bed.. and a chair.
I like it at chair heigth while I sit in it.
1" or 10' it all feels the same!
Everything being controllable, 12"-24" works great as a chair and a hang height
