One more lightning story: When I was about 12 years old I spent the summer on my uncle's farm in south Alabama. One afternoon my cousins and I were working in the yard when a torrential rain storm...
Seventeen people died from New Jersey lightning strikes in the last 20 years. With 9.25 million people living in New Jersey, 17 people is barely measurable! I'd say the odds of getting hit by...
I lived in Arizona for several years, and you can see the monsoons coming up the valley from Mexico for hours. When the monsoon arrives, it typically rains for less than an hour.
So where should...
There are several campgrounds in Wharton State Forest, but this hang is at Batona Camp.
Some years ago, fellow HF member BC9696 got pretty obsessed with this topic, so much so that he started one thread a month after he started the first:

Permethrin kills every insect, to my knowledge. In wet form it will also kill cats and fish. So I think it's great for camping and hiking, but I ain't gonna spray it in my yard.
If Mosquito Joe came out and sprayed your property with permethrin, then it's a mosquito no-fly zone for at least three weeks. Since I have a vegetable garden, I can't do that. I tried spraying my...
Personally, I always want a full tarp with doors, because you can't predict the weather. I have an HG Winter Palace tarp, and it's lightweight, has the same coverage as the Superfly but half the...
Underquilts pretty much eliminate the problem of mosquitoes biting you through your hammock. However, you can get ravaged if you slip off the UQ or fall asleep against an untreated (with permethrin)...
For many years I used 4 ft. tree straps, then switched to 3 fit. tree straps. Here in the Northeast, it is rare to encounter large girth, old growth trees, so short tree straps have worked for me....
Bark beetles don't live on the bark; they burrow underneath the bark. Imagine two bark beetles burrowed underneath the bark, when they hear something:
"Hey Vinny, did you hear that? I think it's...
I don't know if I bought a camo side car - I'll have to get back to you on that.
I didn't buy a camo Chameleon - I won it in a raffle. I also didn't buy camo snake skins - HG just sent them to me despite my order for regular snakeskins. So perhaps I should rephrase - I have never...
Wouldn't this be the 7th Annual NJ Fall Hang? Used to be called the Loco Libre Hang (when George sponsored it). I'm not sure we had an NJ Fall Hang in 2020 due to COVID.
Batona Camo? I don't own any camo.
I got site 4. Looks like 4, 5, 10, 11 (fallkniven) & 12 are reserved. So 1, 2, 3, 6, 7, 8 & 9 are left.
This thread is gonna get shut down since only three items can be sold at one time. See forum FS rules:

I only camp on the Appalachian Trail when I'm in Connecticut - never heard anybody say that hammocks were illegal on the AT. Now campfires are almost always prohibited in CT.
I've always used a continuous loop through the end-channel - it's the KISS (Keep it simple stupid) method. Works every time.
If you like knots (and I don't), then it's a bit ridiculous to use Amsteel or Zing-It since knots can reduce the strength of the rope by 50 to 70 percent.
An 18-year old Hennessy Hammock? Even with just five or six night's use, you would be extremely lucky to get $70. Personally, I'd just keep it as a historical piece. Maybe 20 years down the road it...
The ridgeline length should recalculate from 95 to 110 inches (after clicking on Callc 83%).
I've been using a Fronkey bug net for about 10 years and have never, ever tightened it. It just hangs loose. Mosquitoes attack full frontal - they are not smart enough to fly down, then up to get a...
That label says, "Down Mix," which doesn't sound very promising. Back in 1969, you'd probably be lucky to get 60% down and the rest would be feathers, but "down mix" implies an even lower percentage...
I went to Round Valley once - never again. The police came and hassled our neighbors for an hour, resulting in several hundred dollars in fines. Then they came to our site, and insisted they knew we...
Ever since I started spraying permethrin on my clothes, I've had hardly any problem with mosquitoes. Permethrin creates a no-fly zone that mosquitoes avoid. I see them flying all around, but I'm no...
Of course, anyone who would consider a waterproof hammock would want to be able to fill up the hammock during a strong rain. No tarp needed! By the way, water is a great insulator - no quilts needed.
But who would want a waterproof hammock? Hammocks need to breathe; otherwise you're bathing in condensation, which is why no reputable vendor sells a waterproof hammock.
I've got 40*, 20* and 0* HG premium quilt sets and they work fine for me.
Sounds generous, but I'd have to actually find them in my gear! (Which might be difficult, since I haven't seen them in years)
Dutch gave me a pair of Kevlar straps several years ago. I used them once, and didn't like the way they bunched on the tree - I've never used them since.
Well, I've never had my quilts stuffed for more than 24 hours, and I'm not sure I ever got anywhere near 24 hours. There's not much of a reason to keep your quilts stuffed: at least I can't think of...
The poles are probably where the weight limit comes from, not the fabric.
Either hammock is a good choice. Personally, I have a Dutch Chameleon and am satisfied with it. As for Hexon 1.6, I like it.
I don't think you'll get very far with just a set of 40* quilts in NJ...
Welcome from the Jersey Shore!
Like cmoulder, I can't see how you can manage the weight of the Arc-Teryx and Lawson hammock. If you're disabled, those items are pretty heavy (and even if you're...
I'm a fairly rigid sleeper (always head right, feet left), but I just can't understand asymmetrical hammocks. It seems like a design flaw to me. Whether it is tarp, hammock, or UQ, I'll take...
I have several tarps: polyester, silnylon, Xenon, and DCF. However, the HG DCF Winter Palace is my go-to tarp. I've owned it for ten years and it looks brand-new. It's been through dime-sized...
Welcome back, George.
I'm more of a big tarp guy - my HG DCF Winter Palace with doors is my go-to tarp (11' x 10 ft. 4 inches). So I've never seen the reason for a UQP - I'm not doing skimpy tarps. And even if I was into...
While you may be doing DIY, just look at the market and tell me: how many waterproof quilts do you see? How many waterproof hammocks? None?
That's because of condensation. Nobody makes waterproof...
The reason a Fronkey bugnet works is because mosquitoes are just inherently incapable of attacking from the bottom - they can't figure out how to come from below and then attack your nether regions....
When you get around to it, you'll find a huge difference between "not exactly" and a true hammock camping setup. I used pads for a couple of years but when I went to underquilts, I never went back.
Personally, I'd recommend you try an underquilt since pads don't seem to be very comfortable for you. I made the mistake of spending money on a double layer to accommodate a pad, but it was a waste...
I only buy nylon when polyester isn't available. I have a couple of Hexon 1.6 hammocks that are comfy.
I personally like polyester hammocks - I guess I like the stiffness. Unfortunately, there aren't many polyester hammocks on the market. Dutch used to sell PolyD in 1.2 and 1.4 but discontinued it. I...
Personally, I just buy kit for myself. However, it works out with my family because one son sleeps cold (he gets my 0* quilts), one son sleeps really hot (he gets my 40* quilts), and I'm in the...
I also don't see how the weight of the tarp makes it more difficult to set up. The video looks pretty straightforward.

But if you want to keep that DCF tarp a vendor ships you, then the DCF tarp will have to come out quieter!
There aren't any crease points, unless you fold instead of roll your tarp up.
Delamination only seems to be an issue for people who leave their tarp out in the sun all day. I have heard of some...
I bought my HG DCF Winter Palace ten years ago, and it still looks brand new.
As for the usual complaints about DCF:
1. It's louder in the rain - This might be true, but nobody has ever...
Yeah, with the wind skirt the total cost is $775, and then a stove is gonna cost $250 or more. So expect to spend upwards of $1025 for a full setup.
