I get so few chances to hike in any hills.
I am excited for the chance coming soon!
So it looks like I will get the chance to drive from Roanoke VA to Chicago sometime in the next few weeks.
Can anyone suggest a good day hike/overnighter around the Blacksburg-Perisburg area?
This...
Earlier in this thread I did a pretty thorough analysis of IL. See Post #52.
Short Answer: Hammocks are allowed as long as you stay in your site and do not damage trees.

The campsite is located at 41.385816, -88.245399.
I have stayed here several times.
It is a really nice site.
In 2010 my son and I got stuck in a crummy campsite. The tent we had was old and had poor ventilation. The tent leaked, too, so we had to put a tarp over it in the thunderstorms that poured all...
I got out and did about 4 mi at Hidden Creek State Forest in IL.
What a beautiful day!
Forgot my sleeping cap so my dome got a bit chilly at night, but it's all good!
I have a BA 40* bag. Before I got my UQ I put 1 or 2 blue ccf pads in the sleeve. It worked OK, but the back part of my shoulders did get cold. I still use the bag as a TQ and it is toasty when I...
Yup. Pain and cold are great teachers.
Yes. It has been sooo long. Just an overnighter, but it's MY overnighter.
Well...ARE you there yet? :) Great vid. My bet: She is back on the trail with you in a jiffy!
I agree. The S2S compression sacks are pretty aggressive in space saving. It sounds like a few more liters of pack will get you what you want.
Uh, I was told there would be no math...
Nice report. I agree that bailout was a good idea. I hike for fun and I guess most folks do, too. If its not fun anymore, then the experience is tarnished.
For hanging socks you can use the amsteel triangle at your feet or head. I think the RR has a pocket, too, doesn't it??
W....O....W! Beautiful trail!
That's why we do this! Thanks!
The only hiking I'll be doing is up and down the football stadium selling raffle tickets for the band! It's one way to get some hill climbing in!
Please Tell Me Why I'm Wrong ... well, if you're talking to my Dad, "Because I said so!"

Take a look at this thread...50 State Project- State Parks Rules
It's great to get back out into the woods! Fall is beautiful up there?
It's been said before, and it bears repeating...Cheap, Light, Durable ,,, choose two.
Looks like a great time...but not much sleep!!
Take a look at some Dutchware for some uberlight hardware for suspension, tarp ridge, etc.
I do believe that this is Medicine Man's raison d'etre, oui?
I did an overnighter at Big River SF this weekend. I was very happy to find a little used, but very nice place to hike. Here's the vid. The full write up is on my blog...

I wasn't able to get out there...but, yes, there is water available in McKinley Woods FP. There are various spots along the I&M where potable water is available. Gebhard Woods, maybe Lock 8, I...

I wrote a chapter and verse analysis of IL State Park/DNR rules in the 50 State Project thread. Hammocks are allowed in IL if you stay at an official campsite and do not damage the trees.
