Hi Folks, I have some very sad news. :( One of the more regular attendee's of the Grayson highlands winter hang in particular, Jim Hanson (allhansondeck here on the forums) has just passed away in...
My wife and I might not make it. If we do, it will be Saturday afternoon, and we may or may not stay Sat night. We always get busier than we think. Amazing how that works!
I believe LoveDr and I will be able to attend. Very much looking forward to it!

I'll echo late July/early Aug as a preference. My better half and I would be able to attend either of the last two weekends in July (21-22nd, 28-29th) or anytime in August. We will travelling way out...
Looks like I won't be able to make it down there this weekend. Car has been acting finnicky and don't want to chance it. You all have a good time . May see you in spring.

I'm also going to try to make it. I'll sign up on the spreadsheet about a week out if it looks like I can make it in my 2WD car. I'm itching to get back in the piney woods! :)
WildMed, my first group hang (and obviously winter hang) was up at this Grayson Highlands hang several years ago. It's a good one to get winter experience since you are car camping and can pile in...
Someone more local than me might know better, but I typically check the snow depth NWS map: This one is for the Warren area
- Looks like they have 2-4" and 4-8" in slightly higher elevations.
If...
Gonna try to make this one! Car isn't awd, so we'll see. Not sure if my better half will be with me.

I'll take the SMD traveler. PM inbound.
It sure was great to meet everyone! Thanks to all for being so welcoming and friendly. Nothing like getting out in the piney woods!
I hope we can get a winter ANF hang planned.
LoveDr and I are planning on arriving around 5pm tonight. Don't take all the good trees!
Looks great! You guys are always innovating.

Yo foxpoop, make Intimidator drag the Yeti this year!
Have a great hang. I wish I could justify a 10 1/2 hr drive one-way to the LoveDr :)
Moved up to Jamestown NY from North Carolina. Ready to meet some nice hammock folks in this neck of the woods :)
I think my wife (HF name: TheLoveDoctor) and I are going to try and make this one... Will be really nice to meet some hangers from the Mid-Atl/Northeast as we just moved not long ago. We'll likely...
Just moved to Jamestown, NY from North Carolina. I might have to try this event next year. Looks "fun"
Sorry, I dont, I streamed it (Netflix I think) - But looks like you can get it for sub $6 on ebay.
180° South is a nice nature-centric doc - and might be a fitting tribute to Doug Thomkins, who passed away a little over a year ago.
I really wish I could go with you, but we'll be re-locating to NY state mid-march. I hiked the FHT last spring (Feb-Mar, over leap day) and it was one of my favorite hikes ever, albeit tough....
Depending on cell (data) reception... which is needed for LoveDr to check in with things for work, we are planning on leaving Friday AM, but if we can't any reception, we may have to leave on...
No worries Crawldaddy. The purpose of the trip is to be leisurely and lollygag a bit :) Plus it's LoveDr's first backpacking trip ever. We'll be taking it pretty easy!
Cripes, maybe I should leave you at home then!
11AM on Wednesday should work fine for LoveDr and I. Looking forward to it!
Figured it was time to start a trip report thread: Link
I can safely say the 11th Annual Mt. Rogers went off without a hitch! Well, maybe Phantom Grappler did show many of us the farrimond friction hitch
We had a very good turnout and the...
bet you can't find the purple tarp ;)
Looks like a great time Maz. Thanks for sharing some photos.
Missed ya up at the Mt. Rogers hang this weekend!
will be good to see you again crawldaddy. gates should still be open. We got up there a couple years ago at around 7:30 w/slush and snow on the road and the it wasn't closed. The rangers are usually...
Yes, of course you are welcome to join in! Since it won't be bitterly cold *fingers crossed* this is really a perfect opportunity. Just bring your rain gear ;)

thumbs up! looking forward to seeing you again davyray!
No problem mistone. We'll see yall on Friday and I'm sure we'll do more hiking Fri and sat, weather dependent.

Yeah I think that's the plan. Meet up at 1p Thursday, and be hiking out at 130 from Massie gap. Hope to have a good turnout for the hike. It should be real pretty!

Wow, some of you folks are really pushing these quilts to low temps, especially for just a single layer. I have only used mine as low as 50. I imagine it's ok to 45 for my average metabolism. And I...
glad to have you coming Vino. Used to live in g-ville a couple years ago.
I'll be bringing a box of "free stuff" for people to sift through, in addition to some raffle donations. If anyone else wants to also bring a few small things, we could have more variety for an...
will be good to see visionarylion! Is someone bringing the big group tarp?
A hammock is only part of a system, and I think most agree that 1" tree straps should be part of it. Lightweight polyester straps are pretty good. For $4 at harbor freight you can get a 2pack of 1" x...
Thanks for the good words of caution slowhike. A very good reminder! We'll keep an eye on the forecast and make a group decision.

The hike is ~3.5-4 miles, can be rocky in some parts - basically it's this hike. I think we could probably leave around 1 or 1:30p on Thursday and still be fine with daylight, weather dependent of...
That's cool. You guys going to get up there Thurs or Fri?
Looking at the spreadsheet for Thursday arrivals Isee the two of us, plus KnotHere, VaDukie, and DavyRay, and the aforementioned mistone. Please chime in if you're interested in joining in a group...
Thank you Chad, that's very generous! Hope you can make it in person some day!
I'm wondering if anyone has experience and feedback on the advantages & disadvantages of treating the outer/bottom of a quilt shell with an aftermarket DWR treatment? Or something like the "Nikwax...
Agreed. Very generous of you Pan! Thank you.
David, I went ahead and added you to the spreadsheet as "Tentative" :) Hope to see you up there.
Make it happen sandman!
And to VaDukie, I notice you say you put on the spreadsheet you may need an underquilt - I should be able to cover you on that one w/ a 15-20F full length. Just maybe...
I can't join you, but I'm sure you'll have a great time. I did most of the GA section in early march before the foliage came in on the trees. Really nice views, I'm sure you'll enjoy it and I hope...
Very much looking forward to this one. I'll offer any assistance that I can. Tim, feel free to PM me if you need anything.
If anyone has gear needs, feel free to ask. I'm sure that folks (myself...
