Looks like a tear in the sheath. I've not seen it in a hammock rope before but in other nylon ropes it has happened when I've nicked the rope written is under tension.

You can hang in Erock State park. we had campsites 26 to 30 and there were good trees to hang from. There were several other hangers there and even one group with a slackline Setup.
