I like a fine linen for next to skin comfort, unfortunately, it is not down proof...
on the up side, a linen tablecloth (60x72 or so) is extremely versatile (multi-use!), and can be wrapped around...

you have grasped the concept correctly- overstuff is more down in the channel than the amount required to fill said capacity; this keeps the down just a tiny bit compressed, which helps stop it from...
you might ask You MIL to teach you how to do zippers...there is a bit of a learning curve. maybe you could start with a zippered duffle bag?
