I think they were doing a similar route to ours today. If they made it all the way to the Linville River(I assume where the MST crosses it), then we shouldn't have any trouble making the Shortoff...
Got it! See you there.
Thanks Ken! Looks like a good stop on the way out if the weather is dry.
Hedcase, skippy, Cookie, CapitalBill - I just might be there Thursday night, too.
Thanks Tim. Gonna go try for some shut eye now. Doubtful!
I was just looking at some pictures taken this past weekend of a place near Babel Tower called Avatars Rib. I don't see it listed on Ken's master map. Do any of you fellas know where this is?
If...
Ready to roll tomorrow morning.
Pack is packed (23.75 pounds WITH 2 days food and 2 liters water!!! :D).
Car is prepped and packed.
Probably won't be able to sleep tonight! Too excited!...
Ah, that's too funny!
Jerry
See ya Saturday Ken. So close...! :D
Jerry
Yessiree! No hurry, taking my time tomorrow. I don't want anything to spoil this coming week. Woo hoo!
Jerry
Here is the last re-post of the pertinent trip data. I'm leaving tomorrow morning and will be in the Gorge Wednesday afternoon!!!
I am planning to do a loop backpacking trip around Linville Gorge...
Is this marked "holeinrock" on Ken's master map? We'll have to talk Sunday-Monday plans when we meet up.
Jerry
Nice pics, Shug! Makes me even MORE anxious(if that's possible)!
Jerry
I just reread your post cooldays. I missed that you are starting on Saturday. If you are really ambitious, you could hike down Conley Cove trail, north along the river to the bridge and up Spence...

Conley Cove trail is on the other side of the Gorge. I don't think you want to do that.
You could park at the Tablerock parking area and head north. The trail to the top of Tablerock is...
MacEntyre - I'm sorry you won't be joining us. I was looking forward to talking with you again. This trip might have been my idea, but it was you that gave me the kick in the pants to set the date...
Yup. That's where we should be.
I've been laying out all my gear and starting on the feed bag, too. I'll probably do the re-supply from the car at some point. Maybe a night or two, re-supply for...
Thanks ken. The more, the merrier! I'll add him to the Saturday list.
Jerry
How about a piece of surveyors tape tied to the end of the fence that divides the upper and lower parking area?
...
I was thinking the same thing. If we were to leave some sign that we had passed through the parking area, late arrivals would know to head south.
If the sign isn't there, head north towards...
Yuri - I'm sorry you won't get to make the trip. Sounds like it's working out for the best, though.
MacEntyre - Are you out, too, or just a maybe? I hope you can work it out.
Jerry
Wow, you are in serious DIY mode!
Can't wait to see it! I bet that second zipper will come in handy!
Jerry
I'm happy to have the company. This should be a great trip!
Jerry
I think my previous post is all up to date.
Let's plan on being at the Spence Ridge Trailhead for a 10 a.m. departure Friday morning.
I'd like to climb up Tablerock when we go by, to see the...

SoundWitness - I'll add you to the list.
My sister lives in a suburb of Memphis and took a lightning strike in the tree out side the bedroom window at 2 a.m. last night. Talk about jumping out of bed! It burned out one circuit in their...
I like the sound of the rain on my tarp. Reminds me of camping in the pop-up when I was a kid. I've got a big awning over my deck and you can bet I've got it pulled out when it's raining. With the...

Before yesterday, I'd left the house twice in the last 2-1/2 weeks. The itching was so bad, and pants just made it worse. I'll be poison ivy paranoid for a long time!!! :scared:
I"ll have both...
I'm about ready, too! Giddy is the word! My poison ivy is finally calming down...I can wear pants again! :D
Gonna do a two night trip the weekend before as a final equipment check. I need to try...
Ha! If I want to hike the prairie, I could just stay home!
The other option would be to park at Tablerock, depending how much later it is. That would shave off about an hour.
Jerry
I was asking about Friday, Tim. I thought Hawk-eye wasn't coming in until Saturday.
17 days and counting!
Weather for the week before looks like highs in the 60's and lows around 50. Nice!
First question for the group - How early can everyone be at the trailhead Friday...

skippy, we'll be doing a loop, starting at the Spence trailhead. I'll repost all the pertinent trip data. I haven't done that for a while.
I got a good look at Lost Dog last fall. Looks like you could only get 2 or 3 hammocks up there, but the view is really nice. There's one hanging spot about 10' from the cliff edge. :scared: I'll see...
I'm game for Sunday night. I live so far away I need to stay more than two nights. Gotta get a good fill of the Gorge before heading out. I'm actually planning on getting in there a day or two early...
I would like to hit the trail by late morning, no later than 11, if most everyone can make it there by then. It probably won't be dark till at least 8 or later since we'll be up top.
I'm pretty...
Thanks for the info BR360 and Spam. We are indeed traveling clockwise around/through the Gorge for many of the reasons you listed. Maybe you guys can join us if something comes up in the fall.

That's a great set of photos Ken. He's got more Gorge goodness in his photostream too, and some hammocks.
Jerry
Welcome to HF. All are welcome. Which list should I add you to?

I think we should plan on the clockwise route. Ken, I'm just guessing here, but I think Friday night will find us south of Shortoff, maybe down close to the river. We would pass by the water sources...
I was thinking that too. We can easily carry enough to get us to the Chimney Branch, Cambric Branch or even the water tree or gully pipe. Looks like lots of options on the south end, closer to...
Terrific! Before this happens we'll post which direction we'll be headed. I'm leaning towards clockwise from Spence right now. That should put us somewhere down by the river on Saturday night, for...
