Don't be too fast to dismiss them. They make the best quilts on the market!
At first the website seems complicated, but it's because they offer so many choices to configure exactly what you want....
While the Ti shepherd hook stakes are certainly light, I found they just don't have enough surface contact to hold well.
My favorite stakes are the "Nobendium" shepherd hooks from Kelty. (Yes they...
It all just depends on the person, their size, how they sleep, and the temperature.
I use a 3/4 in Summer, a 7/8 UGQ 20* in Spring and Fall, and a full length 0* in Winter.
Realistically, that...
I bought the 0* Renegade back a few months ago.
It appears in every way to be the Rolls Royce of top quilts, but honestly, I haven't had the chance to test it in 0* conditions. It will be...
Dream Hammocks http://www.dream-hammock.com/index.html
I've been a Clarks user for years and have a few different models.
Along the way, I've tried several other makers. WBBB, etc. I hated...
I agree on the packs. I kinda like some of my cuben stuff sacks and dry bags.
But cuben is a fantastic material for tarps!
It seems that the only people who question cuben as a tarp are those...
Have a look at UGQ "Winter Dream." http://www.undergroundquilts.com/tarps/default.html#WINTER_DREAM
It is available in 11 ft ridge-line, 126 inches wide (10' 6"), in Multi-cam. Sounds like most...
Even if you had a different hammock, I'd still recommend UGQ quilts. Especially, for 0* winter use.
But if you have Dream Thunderbird (as do I) then most definitely go with UGQ quilts and ask for...
My new UGQ Hanger 11WB in multicam arrived today.
Can't really say I'm bothered by the black edge.
...
LOL. As much as I like multicam, I'm not THAT obsessive.
Absolutely true!
The Klemheist is best when resistance is in only one direction, and for most applications involving a ridgeline this is the case.
I use a klemheist on Figure-9 where it ties off...
+1
I have ordered from both.
When I want to go lightweight in Summer I take HG.
When I want to be warm in cold weather I take UGQ.
I think UGQ is built with beefier construction but it also...
Have a look at the UGQ (Underground Quilts) website. http://www.undergroundquilts.com/uq/default.html
They offer a 7/8 length, 66"
UGQ quality is without peer in the cottage industry.
Yep. It's hard to justify the money difference between the multicam upgrade and just the regular solid color tarp, but I think it is so much better looking than my old Winter Dream.
...
Although I already had a "Winter Dream" I've been coveting one in Multicam ever since they were introduced.
Finally pulled the trigger and placed the order. I ordered this one with the center pole...
I've been using Clarks Jungle Hammocks for 15 years. Have owned the original "Ultralight" model (my favorite!), the "Tropical," and the NX-150.
A little heavier, yes. But Clarks is the most full...
I have had about 10 different hammocks from a half dozen different makers,....and the Clarks' Ultralight is my favorite of them all. :shades:
I replace the supplied ropes with DIY whoopies.
I...
I hike and camp almost exclusively in the mountains along the NC/TN state line.
For me, the 3/4 length 20 degree Hammock Gear and the 0 degree Underground Quilts full length serve me well year...
It is possible that OTHER PEOPLE are reading and trying to decide for themselves. They might not be aware of other options.
Underground Quilts is located in the OP's home state. He might have been...
You might have a look at the "Winter Dream" from Underground Quilts. ;)
It's available in both 132" (11ft) and 144" (12 ft) ridgeline length.
Doors included, beefy snaps, beefy stress points on...
Between the mosquitos and the fire ants you won't have time to be worried about alligators. ;)
It's an 11 X 14 wall tent made by Tentsmith.
There is a removable partition curtain about 5 feet back. Makes the remaining portion easier to heat.
...
Yes, indeed!

I've got the tent and the 2 dog stove, but I'm not backpacking it!
And if car camping, I'd rather have a cot than a hammock.
It's just easier to hop up or bed down.
...
I don't know. I suppose one would have to try all available to make a definitive statement.
And,....my bet is that each maker would make a claim.
I'm sure it probably mostly comes down to...
When my kids were very young I dreamed of the day when they would be big enough to go on camping trips with me. Along the way, life happened. It seemed the kids were always busy with...
Whooo Buddy!
Coming home yesterday after a two week business trip had me excited because I was expecting to find a parcel waiting for me in my PO box.
I was NOT disappointed.
The 0* Zeppellin UQ...
I once bought a case of 1000 rounds of ammo at Walmart.
When I got up to the check-out, the woman scanned the bar code and the price came up $24 (and some odd cents). Basically, the price of a box...
The Slinglight is my favorite piece of backpacking gear!
I don't go without it.
I think the 4-turn Prusik is nicer looking and easier to adjust.
But when it absolutely, positively has to hold overnight,.....Klemheist!
I'm not planning on selling my WBBB as it's convenient to keep as a loaner for my kids or a camping partner. But for myself,....I moved on after using the bird only a few times.
I don't like the...
I find that I can get into the warmer full zip bags without a problem while laying in the hammock.
It's the half-zip lightweight bags that give me fits!
But all I can say is that after switching...
Thanks for passing the bushcraft on to the next generation, enjoy them while they are young, .....and welcome to the forum. This is one of the coolest sites on the web.
Go ahead and make all your mistakes while you are young, dumb, and good looking. Let yourself get cold and wet! You will learn from it.
And someday, ....you'll be an old pro with tons of...
I just found the UL to have exactly what I need, no more, no less, in the lightest model available.
I like having an outside pocket to put my pants in at night. If I need something out of a pants...
THIS NEWS REALLY BUMS ME OUT !!!
The Ultralight model has always been my favorite.
And the bad news is I just recently allowed someone to talk me into selling my UL to them. :(
It was someone...
Warbonnet Blackbird.

I put both UQ and TQ into one Granite Gear sil-nylon compression sack in the bottom of the pack, compressed to the width of my ULA Circuit. All the gear that goes in on top serves to compress it...
I own, administer, and moderate a forum of my own. I have also been a long-time moderator on half a dozen other forums, all with a subject matter related to firearms and tactical training. (That's...
I almost always do both!
It takes the better part of a day just to get to the mountains. Usually running late and only a few hours until sundown,.....so we car camp the first night.
That means I...
Back in 2009 my long time camping partner decided he wanted to see what it would be like to camp for a full year. He took a sabbatical from life and literally lived in the Cherokee National Forest...
I use and prefer cuben.
It is definitely lighter!
But my HG cat cut cuben requires a bigger stuff sack than the larger sil-nylon Golite cave.
Another possibility.....
Vasovagal response - This can be brought on by a variety of factors, INCLUDING standing up quickly after having been lying down for an extended period.
(I know all about...
Sil-nylon.
I have accumulated several different kinds of stakes over the years, but these are my favorite.
http://www.kelty.com/p-137-no-bendium-ii-gold-stakes.aspx
What noise? I'm digging cuben!
Have now acquired tarp, dry bag, bishop bag, stuff sacks, packa, ......and have yet to find any downside.
There's nothing really "wrong" with it as is, but you can get more support with less sag if you run your ridge line under your tarp.
I have never once been wet inside my hammock since I started using a hammock back in the 1990's.
And that includes the small 3D integrated rain fly on my first Clark Ultralight.
But along the...
Me too. I have bought 3 Clarks models, an Exped Scout, and a WBBB,.....but the Clarks Ultralight is still my favorite. It was my first.
