Glad to have you aboard. A hearty "hey y'all" from Maylene, AL.
Troop 72 from Alabaster, AL knows how to hammock! At our last campout I counted 10 hammocks (several are in the pic below). We ran out of trees and I had to hang mine between two pickup trucks. ...
I typically use a Sierra Designs pillow. It's synthetic, so moisture is not an issue. What I really like is the size and shape, which work perfectly for me. I just want a little neck support, and...
As Mitt would say, "A hearty cheese grits welcome to y'all!" Glad to have another potential hanger in Alabama. I'm in Alabaster, so only a couple of hours away. You sure have some prime camping in...
I stuff my Hennessey Hex tarp into a WalMart ditty bag. Works great for me.
Taut-line hitch, in most cases.
Didn't it rain most of Saturday and into Sunday?
My wife got me a Big Agnes sleeping bag for my birthday. It's the kind with a pocket on the bottom and no insulation. I slip my Walmart blue pad into the pocket, then sleep comfortably in the...
DaleW, any update on in-the-field testing?
Well, I use the bag that came with mine as a ditty bag for "stuff." I guess you could get creative and use it for: Head bug net (a small head), a bank robber mask, a water pre-filter, or, for you...
Make a long hammock using temporary end-securing like tie-wraps or just a knot. Change the length until you find what works best for you. Cut and secure.
Dang. I'm going to be up there the Sun/Mon/Tue the week before. Have fun! - Nav
I've lived in Alabama my entire life and never heard of Old St. Stephens. I'm even a bit of a history buff! Now I must go and see the excavations. And hang, of course.
Congratulations and well-done. I'm red.. er... green with envy. :)
Seriously... Recall the attempt at making a hammock jacket? That seemed like a reasonable attempt to make some good multi-function gear. While I have a hard time envisioning how a jumpsuit-hammock...
I agree that you won't find a bad place to hang. Last time I camped on Thompson Creek and Ship Rock. One piece of advice: The trees are old and many are quite large. Make sure your tree hugger...
Quite a trip, Beas. Thanks for putting those videos together for us. Hard to fight the weather. Thanks again for replying! - Nav
Thanks so much, Rain Man. That does look like a good loop.
A friend and I would like to do some backpacking in Tennessee's Big South Fork National River and Recreation Area in October. There appears to be no shortage of trails to hike or things to see.
...
Makes me want to go back NOW. Well, maybe not NOW, since we are waiting out a tropical depression in central Alabama. But I'm willing to bet all of those creeks will be full for at least a few days...
Sounds like fun! Hiked Cave Creek trail loop back to the Cheaha trailhead back in July and loved it. Wish I could go, but we have marching band commitments during football season.
On the up...
Yup. Made my first DIY hammock cutting this way. I also now have a nice scar on my right index finger and thumb where I picked up the wrong end of the soldering iron.
Yes, stupid, I know. "Eyes...
Typically I'll hang the hammock so that I can hang one leg out and it touches the ground comfortably. A for the tarp, it depends on the weather. I've hung it as high as I can reach when it's warm...
Although 98 during the day is still a bit on the warm side. :)
Here's my solution:

My ultralight summer tarp is almost exactly the same, except I used duct tape to reinforce the edges and the ridge line. I works great, but I would never take it if I expected bad weather... It just...
Thanks! Not on the air yet, but just got my FCC-issued callsign today: KK4DPO. Yuk. I immediately applied for a vanity callsign... We'll see if I get it.
In any case, I should be lurking on...
Well, I took and passed both Technician (element 1) and General (element 2) Tests today. I'm very excited! I won't receive a call sign for at least a week, but once I do I plan to get on the air...
I say... very clever. I like your thinking. Good job, although I agree with the others on the safety issue.
It's a great solution, especially if you are not backpacking (or at least going far). Once I converted a dome tent rainfly into a hammock tarp because, well, I forgot mine. It worked just fine.
What about latrine facilities? Any installed?
If it's too hot to camp in a hammock, it's too hot to camp, period.
That said, I use an old battery-powered iFan (no longer made).
Glad you're a part of the family. A big "Hey, y'all" from Maylene, AL. "How's Mama 'n them?"
Nice. Looked like a great trip. I smiled as I watched. Thanks for sharing with us!
I will be taking my technician license test on August 7. I'm ready, both for the test and to get on the air. My local amateur radio club will help me select starter equipment, and I hope to be...
The Grand Trunk Ultralight is a great hammock. I'm 6'2" - 250 and have never had a problem. It's cheap and comfortable. You'll ultimately need a bug net (mine is a old thing I picked up at...
I just want some cold weather. 95F and 60% humidity here today.
I've got plastic tie-wraps on my latest small DIY hammock. Seems okay so far.
I slept in mine for a week at Boy Scout summer camp last month. My 250-lb, 6'2" frame fits pretty comfortably in it. Sturdy and light, and excellent with the whoopie sling mods.
On the other...
Forgot to mention that summertime bugs are awful, especially near Blue Spring and Gum Pond. Welcome to south Alabama.
I've camped/hiked in the Conecuh National Forest three times. It's easy (flat) and there are plenty of trees, but I wouldn't call it picturesque. Plenty of solitude and very, very dark at night. ...
I have three tarps: A super-light DIY tarp made from an AMK HeatSheet2 for fair weather in the summer, a Hennessey Hex Fly for in-between weather (I took it to summer scout camp for a week... big...
I wear shorts, T-shirt, underwear and socks designated for sleeping only (yes, I know it's a waste of grams). I just like to feel clean when I sleep.

Any major storm damage on your route?
I ripped the stitches that attached the corners together, then snipped it where the elastic attaches to the TQ so that the gathers would be unrestrained. Worked okay as a conventional TQ after that.
If anyone is interested, I just posted my experiences with this gear here: http://www.hammockforums.net/forum/showthread.php?t=35157&highlight=hammockgear
I spent six days at summer scout camp...
I just came back from 6 nights of Scout summer camp in middle Tennessee (June 19-25, 2011). Every night I slept in a Grand Trunk Ultralight hammock with my brand new Dp Hammockgear top quilt and...
I'm an ASM with a troop of 60 Scouts. Just got back from summer camp on Saturday. This year we took 35 scouts and 6 adults. We had one adult (me) and four Scouts in hammocks. On Monday I took...
Great job, but beware. Making whoopie(s) can become addictive. ;-)
