Hey Valley Scout, I'd be up for hiking that section this summer.
Welcome from the frozen wasteland known as the Poconos.
Hey Laugh.....If you have not done so already, purchase the latest guide and map set from here: http://hike-mst.org/
There's also a data document that is a huge help in planning and logistics....
Thanks for the mnemonic SkidvonArk.
Thanks guys. I will be adding this knot to my arsenal. Currently I'm using ti dutch clips, but I like options. I will be embarking on a 325 mile trek in 2 days, so I'm sure I will find time to...
Hello Fellow Hangers,
It seems that many people use whoopies with a marlin spike hitch. So the question is why? What advantage does using a marlin spike hitch give you? Thanks in advance for all...
Excellent trip report! The CRL is the way to go. Also, too many times I have forgotten to make sure the foot end is a little bit higher before retiring for the night. Does make a huge difference.
That's a bummer. Thanks for sharing. Get well soon.
It's a good way to hang. Used it with stock ropes (HH UL BP) for a dozen hangs with no problem. Then I swapped the HH spectra cord with a thicker PMI cord (5 mm) and hung with that for about 2 years....
I used a Klymit Inertia X Frame for 3 nights on a hike last weekend. However, I didn't use it in my hammock. I rigged up my poncho underneath my hammock and put it in their since I have a Hennessy...
Sounds like an awesome trip! A flare gun might be a good idea if it's allowed. To scare of predators and/or to signal you lift out. Enjoy!
I use both. I use a JRB top quilt (weighs about 1 lb) in the summer. And I use a down bag in the winter.
@vgmohag: I'm pretty sure they're made out of polyester.
I have a cord tired on the ridge line of my Hennessy. I climb in and take them off and tie them to the cord. Then I push them out the entry slit. My hiking boot are stored under my hammock.
A good pad is the bare minimum. But if you're in a damp area it might not be enough. If your bottom side gets cold/chilled, then you might be in for a restless night
I recently went to ground unexpectedly in the middle of the night. It was a polypropylene strap. They don't seem to handle stress or abrasions well. Sucks because they are the lightest straps you can...
Thanks for sharing. Great choice of music. Sucks about your cook kit. Lately I've been hanging my food bag due mainly to coons and quill pigs.
Awesome hang in the video! Kudos!
I use snake skins for my hammock. After skinning the hammock, I fold it up a couple of times and then wrap my suspension (straps, dutch clips, & whoopies) around the bundle. I like keeping my tarp...
Welcome from the Poconos.
That's hilarious! I've never encountered that problem and currently have my hammock out back for a few days now. Haven't been in it since Saturday night, so....
Their double bubble radiant pad is definitely a worthwhile investment. I used it last summer and fall and this spring without an underquilt.
The SS is good for 3 seasons, especially in very wet conditions. Plus you have the option
of using different insulation in it. If hard pressed you can stuff natural insulating materials in it.
As others have mentioned, the hex tarp provides way more coverage. It's great for cooking under. Switching to whoopies will make set up way easier. Also, having your tarp on a separate line allows...
I use 1.75 mm zing it with micro line locks for the corner ties outs. This allows me to form a loop for the stake. It also allows me to position a stake where it goes into the ground easily and holds...
Yes! He has an excellent turn around time.
1.5 pounds, that's awesome! You might be able to tweak your hammock suspension as well as your tarp rigging to save some more ounces.
I've only used the Garda Hitch as part of a suspension system on my hammock. The main drawback was getting the cord out of the rings since I like to cinch it tight. I think for a tarp it's overkill.
I'm a mixer since I'm a tinkerer.
Dutch clips are a great piece of gear. I leave my clips hooked into a loop of my tree hugger straps. I've never lost them since they have never come undone from the loop. I just got the titanium...
I've used Dutch Ware for over a year now and it has never given me any problems nor has it showed any signs of stress or strain. It has made my set ups a breeze. Dutch Ware is a superb product and he...
If you have a down jacket or vest you night want to bring that along. Also, carrying a space blanket is a good idea. I always keep one in my pack and it gets used more often than not. Have fun!
Nice design. Good work. Kudos!
I've used the HH pads and they provide an ample amount of warmth in the summer months. And yes, sweat/condensation can be a problem. I had to order their newer version, the double bubble radiant pad,...
I used a newly acquired UQ and down bag combo on a hike last December. Temps got into the single digits (in Fahrenheit). I was a happy camper.
That pic at night with the stars is outstanding! Also, what type of gel wax are you using with your cotton balls? Thnaks.
The wire gated biners are fine as many have pointed out. I've used them with a garda hitch suspension and didn't have any problems. I've used these:...
Congrats! It's an awesome piece of gear. Enjoy!
Yes, video was marked private. But this should be the link for the video in question.

I'd be game! Let me know. I've got a 3 day weekend next week (June 13-16).
I love my HG CF tarp! And to riff off of Gravity's post:
- The greenhouse effect heats it up and helps my butt get on the trail sooner.
- The translucency helps me see the sky at night or others...
Either rigging is good. I use a continuous ridge. I've had my HG tarp for over a year now and it has weathered a few good storms with high winds. Very tough fabric.
The HH Double pad is great, but it's very bulky. And there is a condensation\sweat problem. I've only used it on the inside of my hammock. Also, this pad apparently replaces their older single model...
I'm with gunner76. I bought a HG tarp with doors (6.5 oz) and it was one of the best investments I've made. I've used it year round. And there seems to be an unlimited amount of ways to configure it....
I just suck it up. After a few days, your body will adapt. I do take Alleve & Advil along but I use it only when it's really necessary. I like the idea about using logs and will try it on my 325...
With a hammock you have less bulk & weight to carry and you get more comfort. There's always trees, parks and other areas, to hang from and those are the areas you would want to stay in if you're...
I use an UQ in the colder months and a pad during the wamer months.
I laughed at the idea when I first heard of it. But, then I thought and figured I'd give it a go. So, 2 years ago I got an umbrella from GoLite. I used it on a 70 mile hike and it payed off. I got...
Kudos. This is a very well thought out design. So many smart features. Can't wait to see one up close!
The space blanket slows heat lost through conduction and reflects it back to you. Also, it's a lightweight and cheap solution to staying warm. I've been carrying and using one for over 28 years. That...
