Headed up to Zion Oct. 7-10th with my backpacking club and checked Kolob Arch off my list of trips. The leaves were just changing and the weather was perfect! It is said to be a strenuous hike, but...
I've been meaning to post this for a couple weeks now. I had great results from following your instructions! Made up 2 summer UQs so some family could join in on a hammock backpacking trip. It...
Thanks so much for posting! I'll be sure to keep an eye on this thread for even more advice!
I also end up using this method about one out of every three trips.
pm sent for bugnet
Fortunately, I didn't have to be THAT creative ;) It is more a case of finding trees the right distance apart that aren't totally clogged with massive amounts of flood debris.
The worst I've ever felt on the trail was in the South San Juans in CO. Got altitude sickness, minor at first (some heart pounding and headaches), but the next day was bad at 12,000'. I couldn't...
I'm actually a hike leader with the Arizona Backpacking Club out of Phoenix. We have quite a few members from Tucson, too. A thru of the Middle Fork looks pretty awesome. Right now, I have my eye...
Very cool! And nicely done finding those hanging spots. Reminds me a little of the Bisti Wilderness in NM only red instead of gray.
Yay! The done with classes euphoria is one of the best feelings ever. Congrats!
Yes, there are trees. Here is a view from Google Maps of the camp. I was just up the road at the Scorpion campgrounds this past weekend! Have a great trip!
Welcome to Hammock Forums! The mountains around Tucson have some great hanging spots!
Thanks everyone!
Detailed hike description and directions to the trailhead can be found here if anyone wants to give it a try.

Well, I think I would put this at an advanced-beginner hiking level. Mostly because of all of the stream crossings. If you can hike for 8 miles and don't mind some cautious footwork on all of the...
If you are looking for a place to set up your hammock in the Gila Wilderness of New Mexico... well, there are many places that will do. But, this place is one of my favorites.
Destination:...
Thanks SkyPainter! It's a great place to spend a couple of days :D
Thanks olzeke! It does look like quite a bit has changed. I'm sure that the floods that come through here are quite impressive. Thanks for sharing.
We actually just did out and back from the Hurricane Wash TH, which is right on Hole in the Rock Road, so no shuttle necessary. We hiked in on Friday and ended up hiking out on Saturday night, but...
Thanks for the kind words everyone!! It was a great trip!
DiscoveryDiver, we did the section of Coyote Gulch accessed from Hurricane Wash TH all the way down to the Escalante River. So, we...
Took a trip with the Arizona Backpacking Club up to Coyote Gulch and Bryce Canyon from March 25th to the 27th.
I was nervous about finding a hanging spot at Coyote Gulch after reading that there...
Oh cool! Didn't think of that. Thanks for the info!
I have searched and searched and still can't find a thread with instructions for how to alter the ridgeline of my WB Traveler so it can be removable. Does anyone have a tutorial that they can guide...
Very nice solution! I've never had a figure 9 bend. Is it just a matter of time?
I usually hang it from the head end of my hammock suspension with a small s-biner. Definitely like having it up off the ground and under the tarp.
The MacCat Standard was a champ, keeping me dry and free from small snow drifts throughout the night :D I let my friend use the Deluxe, and he was a happy hammock camper, except for some UQ issues,...
I was in a panic because the weather is turning bad(for Arizona) this weekend and I have a backpacking trip planned. I had agreed to let a friend try out one of my hammocks, but I didn't have an...
The weather does look pretty messy! I'll be trying my luck(and my new rain gear) in the Supes. :D
Yeah, I would love to have advice on tree strap length, etc! Maybe a combination of tree straps and extenders like continuous loops? Anyone?
Good to know. I'm doing a section of the JMT in August, too, from North Lake to South Lake. Hoping to hang at every camp.
Nicely done! And thanks for reminding me that I "need" another tarp! LOL
The Arizona Backpacking Club is heading to Coyote Gulch the last weekend of March. Just letting you know so you can avoid us if you want
The tree is just out of the shot on the right and I am standing even lower than it. I don't think that the strap was 10' high. The slope downhill in that direction and the angle of the pic is...
Nope, Brian at OES will add them for $4 each. That way they come all sealed and ready to hit the trail. I also have grizz beaks to make it a 4 season shelter. Good stuff.
I would definitely go with side pullouts on whatever tarp you decide to get. I loved the extra space under my OES Deluxe (on the right in image) during rains on my 5 day CO trip this past summer.
I would get a MacCat Micro + Z-line Spectra Cord + Micro Line Loc Guy Line Adjusters.
Looks like Gutermann thread is on sale again at Joanns. This time only 40% off, but still a nice deal if you need to stock up. :)
Wow! Fantastic reading guys! Almost makes me want to try some true winter hammock camping, too. Almost. Loved all of the pictures!
Most of my trips are backpacking. I love getting away from the crowds and experiencing places that relatively few people see. Car camping is definitely fun, though. Being able to break out the...
Nice. Now I just need to figure out where to try this out myself. Shouldn't really have a problem finding a spot in S. AZ. There are a few rocks here. :D
That is awesome. Did you have any issues with the hammock rubbing against the rock wall during the night?
Thanks for the input! I do like the idea of an easier quilt project with synthetic, but I may just challenge myself to do down with this one. Plus, it would pack up really, really small. Maybe I...
 If I decide to go with the 50, then I will probably wait to order until there are more colors available, that orange might blind me during the construction process! :scared:
I'm slowly venturing into the realm of DIY gear (have sewn off and on for years), and one of the projects I would eventually like to do is a very lightweight Summer TQ. Just thinking about materials...
Both hammock and tarp go on the inside for me. Too many thorny plants to catch on things if they are on the outside in AZ. Plus, things don't get wet as often :) It's a dry heat...lol.
I love Mini Aussies! Would love to see a pic of him in the hammock :)
I am also leaning towards favoring my Traveler over my BB. The Traveler is still quite large and I did experience some extra fabric sag, but it wasn't enough to bother me. I am only 5' 2" so it...
The backpacking club that I participate in educates its members on LNT principles. Hike leaders lead by example and are in charge of how much emphasis they wish to place upon the practice. It...
 That is awesome! The next place I move to will definitely have to have hanging options!
I left my tree huggers on the last backpacking trip that I led. Bummer! Guess I was more distracted getting everyone up and on the trail than I should have been. :(
Nice! I keep looking at the Palo Verde trees behind my office, too. There are actually enough places for at least 5 hangers. I think the bosses might be too uptight to let that fly, though.:crying
