Well, Fronkey IS special.
+1
Always took me longer to set up my tent than my hammock. I've spent up 45 min. setting up a tent. You know, adjusting for some what level, removing sticks and stones, filling in holes, moving...
Because you totally embrace the "Roughing it" mantra.
I think it is this more than anything. Back in the early '70's when I first started backpacking, there was a lot of tinkering going on as backpacking wasn't as mainstream as it is now. I can remember...
That is one thing that never seems to be addressed in the survival community, the value of a good night's sleep. Just as important as food and water.
They didn't make one way to hang a hammock and quit. I like trying out the latest and greatest whiz bang item. Some work for me, some don't. It's all part of the fun.
I didn't like the bead much. Like you said, you can't add it later and if it is too big, I had trouble getting it to close right. I have added a loop and tied a stopper knot and that works well. You...
I played around with sleeves and you can put a bead in the loop to stop the slider from coming off. The best for me was a length of cobra stitch on the end of the loop. Gives me something to grab a...
Yeah, I'm a sucker for them, too. I keep two of the small, emergency ones in my daypack. They are just so shiny!
Used synthetics for years and I always got cold. Switched to down for weight and compressibility reasons and I have never been cold. I think that, for me, down just breathes better than synthetics....
I've played with "space blankets" since they came out and I can't tell that they are any better than a sheet of plastic when used as a blanket.
I tether mine with my head. So far, I haven't had the need to tether mine.
What be a QFT?
For me, the strap suspension on my Blackbird is easier and quicker to use than whoopie slings. Now that should confuse the noobs out there.
Another good, cheap line is fishing trot line. It comes in different sizes so I'm able to find line that has a large enough diameter that I can handle it when my arthritis is bothering my hands.
Might help if you told us what suspension you have as there are two different suspensions that are available on the Blackbird. Also,we need to know what it is you don't like about the suspension.
...
I'm another fan of drip lines. I recycle my old cotton shoe laces for this purpose.
My response is usually, "Yeah! I got killed three times in one night. Didn't get a wink of sleep!"
I still like to mess with knots but the more the arthritis in my hands bother me, the more I rely on gadgets. The other day I was trying to make a fire with a friction bow just for giggles. Between...
You know, this is just as important to tent (pardon my language ) campers as well, but this is the only place where it gets mentioned on a regular basis.
What?! No graphs!!
Great video. One of these days I'm going to make a bridge hammock. Well, maybe not but I can always dream.
I use a ridge line with my tarp, so when I'm ready to pack it away, I furl it like you would a sail and then I cram it in it's stuff sack.
I leave mine attached. One less thing to forget to take.
You are on page 7.
I think it would be because hammocks are not a region specific topic and for some odd reason, the goal here on hammock forums is to promote hammocks. Go figure :D
What does my screen name mean? It means I was too lazy to type out Theodore.:D Besides, I don't do trail names, CB handles, etc.
I use braided mason's line, but that is just what I happen to have. I think any line would do as long as it is able to be tied without loosening up or at least maintaining the friction you want after...
The solomon bar knot or whipping knot not only closes the loop but it primarily keeps the diamond knot from rolling out of the loop when under tension. There is actually very little pressure on the...
I had pretty much the same problems with opening one, also (arthritic hands). The sliding knot works well with my hands. I started with using a cobra stitch until I saw your video and went "Duh !"....
Good to see you back doing reviews. I always enjoy them.
Just one question. Why did you use Henry Mancini's Baby Elephant Walk for music featuring Kangaroos? ;)
I would NEVER stuff anything. I'm a crammer and proud of it. Stuffing implies a certain amount of finesse and skill.
I agree with you. I'm kind of leery of someone who joined in Nov. 2009, only has 5 post and suddenly wants information.
I agree with Law Dawg ( ret ). I see hammock camping as very small slice of the camping world. I do two types of camping. Car camping and backpacking. Car camping involves all of the comforts that...
There are noises at night? I'm a sound sleeper who is blessed/cursed with a hearing impairment and tinnitus. So nightly noises don't affect me. Of course the down side is that I won't hear noises...
Those are my sentiments, also.
As far as the search function here goes, I haven't found a search function yet that thinks the way I think. The fastest way I've found to find some thing...
Never thought about the damage done to the root system. Wonder how much damage is being done by ground dwellers. ( not a flame but just wondering)
I was thinking about something along those lines. Looks like it would at least prevent any sawing action. I have a bunch of clear 3/8" tubing pieces laying around that would be perfect for that...
Is it a gathered end or a bridge?
Looks like polypropylene sheet foam. I've used for cozies and such. I've never tried it for a pad but if have access to waste sheets for free, it would probably work for light duty. It is not very...
And easy on the eyes!
I wouldn't recommend getting on that slippery slope. Read this thread http://www.hammockforums.net/forum/showthread.php?t=19359&highlight=pathfinder. It got pretty ugly there for a while.
When I first started hammocking, I used rope for suspending my hammock. At the time, my knowledge base was a quick glance at Just Jeff's web site and a "Shut up! I know what I'm doing." type...
I have a Warbonnet Blackbird and I use the attached bug net year around. Helps to keep my quilts from falling out when I change position and it gives me a place to prop my arm.
When I first got into hammock camping, I saw some discussion about this so I decided to inquire about hammock camping at some of the AR state parks that I frequent. All the rangers I talked to were...
I'm dating myself here but back when I learned rock climbing techniques, this was how you attached a belay line to yourself. We didn't have climbing harnesses, descenders and such available back in...
After three different whiplash injuries, I can't sleep more than about 15 min. without a pillow no matter where I'm trying to sleep.
I told you that splicing rope is highly addictive.
Actually, I find it easier with the small stuff.
I started out splicing three strand cordage. Not as easy as hollow braid but doable. You get to get real acquainted with a marlinspike.;)
...
JaxHiker, be forewarned. Splicing rope can become highly addictive.;)
Good job on your whoopie sling.
Anyone notice the irony in a video about a bear tearing up a hammock and ending with "Enjoy the Wild"?:scared::lol:
Glad a hammock and tarp were the only things damaged. They can be dealt with a...
