I use Tyvek too. I keep a 8x3 piece in my camping kit, it makes a good groundcloth during the rare times that I use my bivy on the ground.

I use them on my DIY tarps to set the tension on my guy lines. They work almost identically to Dutch's tarpworms IMO, just a bulkier version.
You're right- "The worst day fishing is better than the best day at work"
My latest experience in Pennsylvania really showed the contact time required to stop the mosquitoes. Everything I was wearing was treated, but I still had 20+ bites by the end of the trip. The bites...
Ouch! I'm still waiting for my turn...
I picked up a revolt 10 degree 75 inch on sale for 240, the standard price is now 235! And it looks like they don't charge extra for dri-down vs regular down...I was too stingy to pull the trigger on...
That looks like a nice hike, what was the total distance covered? I camp in the Catskills 4 or 5 times a year, but I haven't been to Giant Ledge before. Might be time for me to check out some new...
Had some free time this weekend, so I took out the inflatable raft and went for a quick paddle in Harriman State Park. Spent about 2 hours on the water, failing at fishing, before I hiked up to a...
+1.
Although, I have started to roll the corners with my guy lines just to keep them from tangling- still no bubble though. I think a single tube mesh snake skin eliminates the problem.
I hope you can give us more details on the quality of the sleeping bag once you get it, I've been wondering about these for a while. Sub'd to follow the progress of your DIY quilt!
I have a GT double, and like Tom already said, it's a channel end hammock.
I got rid of the stock suspension. From the hammock to the tree, my set up is:
Continuous Amsteel loop larks headed to...
I've been able to run a comparison every time I go on a trip with my tenting buddies. Once we find a general location of where we want to be, we get to setting up our individual shelters. They...
Like most of the responses- I think I can be ready in 30 minutes or less. My gear list has been refined over the years, and the primary items really don't change. I've used the same UQ and...
I've also heard that poly is more UV resistant than nylon.
I'm in! I would love to try out a new hammock.
A few weeks ago I went camping with a few friends. Three guys were sharing a tent, and my buddy and I were in hammocks- it was his first time...
I have the same hammock and went the DIY route with a Fronkey style bugnet. Used it a few weeks ago in a veryyyy buggy camp, and it worked great. Not the best if you're in to lounging in the hammock...
I agree with the others. A KAQ Jarbidge is very comparable in price, comes ready to hang, is proven, and provides a temperature rating. I saw the rumpl on Mass Drop, and was not too happy to see...
And maybe make a stuff sack or 2 with the remainder.
Nice set up. That tarp doesn't look too bad at all. I stated out with a few of those super cheap woven poly tarps. I still think about going back to them sometimes...they haven't failed me yet.
I'm hoping for the sun to break through the rain some time this weekend too. Just finished a 2nd gen silpoly tarp and fronkey style bug net that I would love to test out.
There are a few threads on the forum discussing the same topic. Figure 9s might not be trusted (or have proven to fail) as part of a hammock suspension system, but the small ones sure are handy. I've...
Nice breakdown. I feel the same as you, except that I haven't gone as cold as your lowest. The air temperature between 25-35º isn't all that noticeable to me, but having to put stoves, fuels,...
I did literally this exact thing too. 36 inch per door sounded reasonable to me, although I have not tested it yet. I hope to get out this weekend to see how my measurements worked out.
I like to sleep by a stream if possible to hear the water rushing by. That kind of drowns out all the other odd noises that can potentially keep me up. Although, if the noise is rhythmic, it...
Does this material have a front and back side? Or is it the same on both sides? I see in the description that it is coated on both. I guess the real question is: when making a tarp, should there be a...
I just ordered some silpoly with the intention of making a nearly identical tarp! I'm glad I found your post before I got started, it's giving me more confidence in the decisions I've made. I got 8...
So it will be an undercoat underquilt...There's got to be a clever name in there somewhere.
Very nicely done! I have a few of those too, but I am thinking about using them in a Dutch Tarpworm kind of setup.
Good choice. I'm a little late to the party, but I've put mine in a compression sack and had it down to roughly 5 inches high X 8in diameter. It probably isn't the best way to carry it though- I'm...
I've been looking into places to overnight close to the NYC area for a while. It gets old having to drive 3 or more hours to get to the Catskills just for 1 night. From the NYSDEC website:

This is a pretty interesting idea! If a double layer hammock isn't too compressive on insulation, that could be the ticket. I saw a barebones comforter at Ikea 2 weeks ago. It was going for 10 bucks,...
People (manufacturers) make mistakes. It would not be the first time that erroneous measurements were taken. Some companies handle it pretty well- check out Merkwares' video correcting their error...
I'm in, thanks!
If you are still interested in the concept of a TQ with a pad sleeve, Brooks Range makes something they call a "Cloak". It sounds very much like what you were describing. I was considering one to use...
Thanks for the tip! I just checked my order details and realized that I had the inner and outer fabric colors reversed in my head. May be the dumbest mistake I've made in a while!
But as a side...
That is very plausible! I'll have to rehang and test that out.
I recently purchased an Enlightened Equipment Revolt UQ, and had a chance to test it out last weekend. It worked great and kept me very warm at 17ºF.
One thing I noticed though, was that the...
That's awesome. I placed my order and currently waiting for the shipping confirmation. This is agonizing torture!
Based on that picture, it looks like you can get it down significantly smaller...
Thanks Tim!
I've been on the edge about getting my first down UQ this season. This post has sold me- I just placed my order!

Hi all,
Can someone school me on the relationship between fill power and compressibility? Assuming the same amount of fabric is used to make 2 UQ's to the same temperature rating, will a 850 fill...
I'm actually having some trouble with my Jarbidge. I've hung with it twice, so far. The first time at 45ºF low, and the second was last weekend at 34ºF low. I had a friend lay in it so I can adjust...
I put mine in a compression sack and I'm able to get it to roughly 8in diameter, 4in high. It might be able to shrink down a little more, but the bag I use doesn't really allow for much more...
I hung last weekend too, and the low was about the same, just a bit above freezing. I noticed some throat irritation and congestion later on in the day, but thought the pollen was the blame. I'm...
Can you provide us with the weight of this rainfly? Thanks!
Hi all,
I am considering making a DIY down UQ, but the though of thousands of tiny fluffy fibers floating freely throughout the house is very off putting. My idea was to soak the down before I...
Ah, I missed that post about the blue nylon tarp. I was talking about the cheapo poly tarp, the one you would use to line your trunk from dirt etc.
I've been very interested in getting one of these for a summer TQ. I haven't seen it in person yet though. There is already a thread discussing it:...
Check out the Schrade schf 9 and schf10 if you're not concerned about weight. They are .25 inch thick, and weight about 16oz. Should be available for under $50, maybe under $40 if you catch a good...
I sat under a blue tarp through 5 hours of rain and stayed completely dry. It continued to rain for 14 hours total, and all of the gear/ground underneath the shelter was dry. I've used one over my...
