That sounds spot on! I thought of doing the foot box the other way but as you say when entering the hammock you will over stress the seams!
What about just putting shock cord through the hem like...

To cut off you hood sew two lines of tread about 5-10mm apart along the line you wish to remove it (use a sharpie to mark it first) then cut between those seams that way you will not cover yourself...
