Unfortunately I am leaving this weekend for this trip and I will not have time for mods or purchases. I'm wondering if most folks would be comfy with a 3/8th in, 26in wide pad underneath with a low...

d_mn... I almost wish the bugs were coming instead of lows that low.
EDIT: Low now expected to be 36F. Going to take down slippers and custom-made cuben fiber down pants w/ 900fill. I'm also...
What temps did you see at night?
Were the bugs out the entire night or as the temps dropped they went away?
Hello,
Newbie hammock user here and I'll be hiking in VT this weekend with lows expected around 38-39F at night.
I have a Grand Trunk Nano 7 Hammock:

6.2oz or 176g for the Grand Trunk Nano-7 hammock & 23 total feet of Amsteel-blue 7/64s for suspension w/ knots. Storage pouch cut off hammock.
....Are there other benefits to having my tarp tie off around the trees on its own as opposed to tying it off to the tree strapping? The latter would use less guy wire and thus less weight.
I...
Reason being....(IMO at this point)
- Easy to tie
- Uses the least amount of amsteel in the knot
- Maximizes the girth of the tree or span in between trees to suspend my hammock.
- Relatively...

Hrmm, looking at the claytor method, you have rope running to and from the tree, instead of one length of rope. I think that would would require carrying more rope than other methods.
I'll look at the claytor method tonight, thanks!
I guess I don't need adjustable on the fly, but if my newbie self doesn't get the sag right the first time, I don't want to untie knots for 10min...
A friend suggested a "slipped trucker's hitch" for my needs as is it adjustable.
"I've got to say -- since I realized this way to tie the trucker's hitch, I have NEVER used another tautline --...
Hrmmm....thinking some more...If I go with a marlin spike hitch out of amsteel and hang a fixed length of amsteel from my hammock to the knot on the back of the marlin spike hitch, would I be in...
I guess I can use a marlin spike hitch (using a stout stick as the spike, no weight...do people find them snapping under load and that's why they use bits of aluminum or tent spikes?) to get some...
Ok that's fine, there's always a fiddle factor (in this case it is using sticks and retying) with going lighter. We'll see how much I can stand. But first I am going to try some of the adjustable...
So if a friction / adjustable knot may not hold w/ slippery Amsteel, I guess I can make separate lashing out of Amsteel. It would just replace the wide, black webbing in this video, right?...
Ok, I definitely have some ideas for keeping the Amsteel from hurting the tree, but what do you guys think about the adjustable hitches? And if the slippery amsteel will hold with my weight? I...
Thanks for the suggestions FLRider. I'll just have to try some of the adj. hitches in the backyard and see if they slip with me in the hammock.
A suggestion from a friend (duh):
"I haven't done...

Hello Everyone,

Thanks for the info. What particular quilt is stuffed under that rain jacket in that picture?
Hrmmmm....
Now that I think about it, I can either pick rain protection while hiking all day...
According to the size chart on Backpackinglight I'd wear a size small, but that is with no insulating layers on and just a T-shirt.
I purchased the Sierra Stealth w/ 900FP down:

Much credit to Festus and NFA for sleeping on the Island one night...I was just too darn...
I was worried about starting my 2009 Honda Fit, but Festus started it after a few times trying to turn it over at the site. 0w-20 oil and a good battery FTW!
I had a wonderful time. Big props for Festus for doing it in a hammock....
