If you're worried about claws, canvas hammocks can work really well. If you're just hanging it around the house and have a different setup for camping, the heavier material shouldn't be an issue.

I use a normal sleeping bag in my hammock and it works well. I can see the benefits in a hammock specific Top Quilt, but the list of gear I want to buy is already pretty long... :P
