The longer I camp, the lazier I get. So yes for leaving the all the lines attached to the tarp. For that matter, I also leave the suspension attached to the hammock. Pretty much a "yes" to...

I use a Dutch sock in the winter. I take the bugnet off by Blackbird XLC and use the sock for a temperature bump. I have always heard it gives you a 10* boost and I believe it. Condensation can be...
I know your are probably already doing this, but I always hang my hammock and tarp up to dry for a few days after a trip. I store them after they are good and dry.
Always good to see another Kentucky boy on here! Welcome from Lexington!
George, as one of your customers, I fully support your decision as everyone here does. You make a very high quality product, but your health comes first. Get well and recover. Bless you, brother.
Good decision....because nobody ever regretted being dry in the rain! Worth the few extra ounces, in my opinion.
No rain: I bring a little s-biner and some cord to hang it from a tree.
Rain: Keep it in the rain cover on the ground under the hammock. If it's really bad, in the trash compactor bag that I...
Well, you guys are making me feel much better about the 4 season tarp I ordered a few weeks ago.
If you want to make one yourself, a lot of people use arrow shafts. Don't use carbon though. I drilled a small hole to tie on a piece of yellow zing-it and the toggle began to crack. I think...
Hammock insulation is another one of those things that varies from person to person. If you stay on the "hammock path", I doubt you will stay with just one set of TQ and UQ. You may want to see...
In my never-ending pursuit of laziness, I wonder if you could just use binder clips to clip the Costco quilt to the edges of your main UQ? Following a suggestion on a Shug video, I always carry a...
Thanks for the post. I ordered a Journey. I plan to pitch it inside out to seal (when it gets here).
Glad you are ok. Live and learn. Great documentation on this disaster hike - call it a case study. Thanks for sharing this and the lessons learned with us. You (and we that read this) will be...
This is my go to for research before I may any major hammock purchases. But the hammock world is very customizable for each individual. That's why so many people like it (and the unbelievable...
This is one of the things I love about hammock camping: endless customization and configurations. My suspension preferences have changed over the years. I started with whoopies and straps with a...
You guys got me, too. I ordered a Journey tarp to cover the nastier weather. Can't wait to get it and bling it out! That's part of the fun.
Same here. I tied a small piece of yellow zing-it to the head end of my hammock and bishop bag. The winter sock stays packed with the bishop bag in the winter, so I don't have to worry about...
I'm with you on the Thunderfly. I currently have a WB Mambajamba. I'm looking for a little more end coverage in the rain. If you are looking for one tarp, the Thunderfly is the best all rounder...
The Mpowered website says they weigh almost a pound, so they won't make the cut for the backpack. I'll stick to my old blow up LuciLight. I love that thing.
I have a Warbonnet Blackbird XLC and usually turn a few times in the night from back to side and back. I sleep much better in a hammock than on the ground, even with going back to side. Some lucky...
Happy Dutch Day!
I have one of his 20*TQ and a 0*UQ. You will not be disappointed with the quality. Top notch!
Nice trip report! I think the Thuderfly must be one of the best all-around tarps. I've got my eyeball on one.
I moved to a hammock because I slept so much better. I have noticed after a long day of hiking, when I pull my legs into the hammock or into the topquilt, they have a tendency to cramp. I'm...
I wasn't a trekking pole guy until a few years ago. Besides the stability on the trail and relief they bring on the knees, I love the flexibility they add to the tarp. I use mine for porch mode,...
I have noticed a little water absorption with my silnylon Mambajamba. I'll probably buy a silpoly Thunderfly and sell the Mambajamba. That Thunderfly may be the perfect tarp (for me). Perhaps...
I think you guys just talked me out of getting a wasp. I've been using the flies with no problem. They are just tiny to fiddle with cold hands or gloves. Wasps were just a tad bigger. I secure...
Whoopies stay with the hammock. Straps and carabiner go in a bag with my stakes. However, in order for a faster setup, I just ordered Ti Dutch cinch buckles and Dutch clips. That will all stay in...
The consensus seems to be black. My topquilt is solid black. The downside is that it is very hard to tell which side is inside or out in the dim light!
On top of layering quilts, I've had success with a hammock sock. It's definitely warmer with one. I've heard claims of a 10* bump.
Take it with a grain of salt. Backpacker magazine recently did a review of hammocks. There was not one cottage vendor. Some people just don't know what they are missing.
Welcome from one Kentuckian to another.
I always had to get up on the middle of the night to pee when I was on a tent, too.
JRB Shenandoah 40*. I like it because it can also be used as an underquilt.
Did you order during the "not black Friday" sale? I'm patiently awaiting my Habenero.
My experience is: mouse sounds like squirrel, squirrel sounds like deer, deer sounds like bear, bear sounds like T-Rex. I medicate to sleep. Melatonin or Tylenol PM.
That's a great way to introduce your kid to camping. The backyard is the best place to start!
That. Is. Awesome. I can't wait until my daughter is old enough to take on a backwoods over-nighter. We've started with a fair weather car-camp.
Red River Gorge is beautiful, but very crowded in great weather. I prefer Big South Fork, though. It is much less crowded and still has a quite a few rock houses and arches. There is a great book...
Don't get me wrong, it can be crowded but you should go. It really is a beautiful place. Mid week in the winter is not a bad option if you are looking for solitude. You'll still see a few people...
The best time to camp in Red River Gorge is in the winter. The crowds in summer are massive.
Happy Thanksgiving and blessings to your family, George. That goes to the whole hammock community.
After spending the holidays with family, we may really be looking forward to an escape into the...
Looks like I'd better figure out the colors I want on my Habenero.
It wasn't necessarily a specific trip. Where I hike in Kentucky, flat ground for a tent can be hard to come by. I've never had to search too far for 2 suitable trees. That first night's sleep in a...
Thanks, Dutch! Just placed an order to bling out my tarp tie outs.
+1. I was hoping to get a deal on a winter wooki.
I've hiked the BSF area about 4 times. Some trails are pretty chewed up by horses. The Yahoo Falls Loop is one of my favorite hikes. The book "Day and Overnight Hikes. Kentucky's Sheltowee Trace"...
I was wondering the same thing. I have a JRB Shenandoah that I use as a TQ in warmer weather. I plan on layering it with my Greylock 3 as an UQ this winter.
I also have an XLC. I ditch the bug net in cold temperatures and add a Dutch Argon Vented Sock for warmth.
I second that motion. My WBBBXLC is super comfy. I have never slept so well when camping.
