Last Winter of '21 Tango in Harriman?
If anyone wants to join, I'm planning a sub 24 hike/camp tomorrow and Friday (2/25-26) to enjoy the last of the remaining snow before the white world succumbs...
Maybe something like THIS?
Maybe start off with a simple shock cord/channel setup?
I use short quilts and long quilts in all kinds of weather and these work for me with minimal fuss. Perhaps they will perform similarly for...
Yes, I'm guessing it's a constrictor loop.

Indeed! I used this exact method for both campsites recently at Pharaoh... I did not carry any stakes so I was really committed to it. And thankfully not disappointed.
Looks like a buntline hitch with an overhand as a stopper knot on the tag end.
This has definitely become the Harriman info repository.
Great job on the video! Thanks a bunch... my wife really got a kick out of it!
I have much more appreciation now for how much extra work it takes to document these trips, especially in...
Windy setup is harder, for sure! The key there is to prep the area before starting. Figure out the general area where you'll be pitching your hammock and tarp and walk over the whole area a few times...
I was lucky that the trail was completely packed so it was like walking a regular trail... easier, even!
In the unbroken stretches of Pharaoh it was a bit of a struggle to maintain 1 mph!
That sweet spot was open and hasn't been used in some time... snow was completely undisturbed. :)
Glad you guys are getting out!
After the long weekend at Pharaoh last week I was only able to barter a short day hike this morning. Went from Silvermine to Brien to Black Mtn and returned along...
Even though I like integrated I have not ruled out bottom entry, especially if could find something made with the really light material.
The reason is the reliability factor for a buggy trip far...
320g (11.3oz!) for the 11 footer... good argument for an integrated net and a UQ made with Argon 67 shell. :shades:
I use some plastic s-biners to attach ends to hammock CLs, and as long as the shock cords have the right amount of tautness I find that they stay in place pretty well. But I don't toss and turn a...
Gotta agree, I got them on my first 2 hammocks, Chameleon and Darien, staked them out once and didn't see the need and have never used them since. I also don't use quilt hooks!
Definitely depends on the totality of conditions.
About 1.5 yrs ago I did the Laurel Highlands Hiking Trail in western PA and it rained a lot, and while the relative humidity (RH) was pretty high...
Good to know I'm not the only one to observe this. Some years back, pre-hammock, on a 3-night trip to Spruce Knob/Seneca Creek (WV) I took my synthetic Prodigy (pre-cursor to the Revelation Apex)...
Years back I was dubious about its value and suspicious of its performance over time but I'm now convinced that it works as advertised. I first bought a 50deg EE Revelation and really used it a lot...
Seems the fleece is damping the sound. But fleece is heavy and bulky!
^^^^^ Things like this work well for me.... even at 75°F I find I will cool off once I'm completely at rest and body metabolism slows down, then gradually cover up feet, legs, arms or whatever it...
I got lucky pretty early by ordering a DH Darien with Robic 1.7 and went with their recommended dimensions of 62" width for a 10' (my spec) length. I have other hammocks but it remains my favorite.

Is there anything that has not been addressed by 'Seinfeld'?
The noisy material is the reflective sheeting inside the air mat so a liner isn't going to help.
However, I have it on good authority that a 15 mile hike with a few thousand feet of vertical will...
DCF translucency doesn't bother me at all.
Bright moonlight is addressed with a beanie, hat or buff.
What you (OP) have outlined works perfectly for me, using various clothing items to augment the TQ and sit pad in the foot box when it's colder. But this comes with the usual caveat that we're all...
In that case you could get something like a DH Darien made with Mtn 1.2 and a light quilt set and DCF tarp and still keep it around 3lbs total for the whole kaboodle.
cmc4free's weight break-out a...
How light do you want to go, and for what night time low temp? For warm weather (say night time low of 50°F) it is entirely possible to get a complete hammock/tarp/quilt setup (including hammock...
Well maybe the 3-6" on Thursday will stretch it out and get us another weekend or 2!! :shades:
I agree with Phantom.
The combination you've described might be adequate to get you through the night comfortably. However, I would absolutely test this in similar conditions in a place that has...
Based on the weather forecast for the next few days, I expect it's gonna suck bigly from here on out. :(
My local trail is somewhat similar so I'll have some idea the next few days. But it looks...
You can find all the materials you need to make your own poles at Quest Outfitters.
Use a one-piece ridge line and string it up with a lot of tension so that the poles do not rub the tarp.
If...
^^^^^^This perzackly.
Unless your tarp is nylon... the stretch can be uber-annoying. However, even nylon is going to stretch only so much, so keep that in mind when pitching and leave...
The purpose of the SRL is consistent sag in the hammock. Too much slack gives you more sag, but too tight gives you the same sag whether it's just a little tight or tight as a banjo string. You might...
I fully understand it. If you hadn't gone through all that went before you wouldn't be where you are now, with the wisdom gained from trying things that didn't work for you.
My wife sometimes...
I knew that 25 foot dog bone would come in handy some day...

That it is possible to hang a hammock with 2 straps and nothing else.
I had the same thought when seeing that the first time but figured that perhaps a small loop of shock cord could join the two.
But seriously, I don't want to add any more 'moving parts' to the...
That's one of those places where I'd like to go back and do it with nice weather.
Would've been nice but we had approximately 30 stream crossings (County Line Branch) that day which made it impractical. The dry set of longjohns and spare socks were really critical for that trip....
It's hard to say from looking at the photos on the website (<-- link)
It appears to have some hooks or clips for attachment, which of course is a lot different than the elastic cord suspension...
Cold and wet is Type 3 fun. And no-drama-queenery dangerous if not properly equipped and experienced.
From the Black Forest Trail in PA, one fine early April...

For UQ maybe look at the Simply Light Designs Trail Winder.
Enlightened Equipment (among many others) makes Climashield APEX top quilts.
Yes. The Prusik loop doesn't slide back and forth, so it will not wear out the grosgrain.
I don't know, but I just upload them to HF Gallery and link URL from there. I've tried external URLs like Google photos and for me even those don't work!
I'm not really a bridge guy but I've experimented with them a bit. Similar solution using a very light (4.2oz) carbon fiber trekking pole and it works great with a Ti toggle which acts as a dowel.

I have a few EE UQs but they're all from before the recent re-design. I'm a little perplexed about the way the new design works — thinking that the older ones work very well for me — but would be...
Just a couple of pix to illustrate the absolutely perfect bluebird conditions we enjoyed. Squeaky, crunchy cold and almost no wind!!

Nope... no worries at all with that.
