Check your local thrift stores for sewing machines. Just be sure to plug it in and see if it goes. IE the needle goes up & down, and the bobbin case does its circular thing.

My first MYOG project was a 4 season tarp, pattern via DIY gear supply.
The cat cuts weren't that bad, and I think it makes for cleaner look when set up. YMMV
