Welcome from the Fort Knox area. I started hammocking a few years ago, but I got away from the woods for a long time. I'm just pulling out my gear and checking out all the new developments that have...
After a long absence from not just the forums, but from hammocking and hiking as well, I'm getting in shape and returning to my dream of through-hiking the Appalachian Trail. Meanwhile, I hope to...
Nifty idea this. I'm returning to the forums after a long absence, and I see there's now more than a few hangers here in Kentucky. Thanks a lot for setting this up.
My first post on these forums in -- I don't know; years? Good to be getting back into this, and I dig this thread. Some of the answers are a lot of fun.
My screen name, "Manach," is Scottish...
Here's the calculator. But that's not the load calculator, I think.
I just came back to the forums a few days ago. If I'm not much mistaken, Hammock Forums is currently getting more traffic than Whiteblaze.net. Brings a happy tear to the eye just knowing so many...
I'm just a tad smaller than you, Hempseed. I've used a Warbonnet Blackbird, which is fairly roomy for me, but there's a definite learning curve in hanging it just right. I'm now trying out an ENO...
Howdy, folks. It has been nearly a year since I was last on the Hammock Forums and I'm very happy to see it's still up and running.
I hope all has been well with each and every one of you, and...
Sale is pending (unbelievably).
Believe it or not, one person has tried my Blackbird and did not like it. She likes her Clark better.
Imagine the top guy having a suspension failure. Down will come baby...
HC4U, that's a great link. Thanks a bunch. Digital maps should be fine, I think; I can get weatherproof paper to print them.
When you say some spots can be rough do you mean dificult climbs and...
Anyone hiked the completed sections of Kentucky's Pine Mountain Trail? I'm not finding much information about it online and I'm curious as to how well a hammock would do.
Also, has anyone seen the...
No doubt. That's essentially what I've read everywhere.
That was my idea. Glad I was solid on that one. I think I could handle the weight for eighty miles just in case.
Got it. Thanks, guys.
Nest, how'd you make out with your hammock in the Smokies?
Looped at both ends? How's that work?
Hey guys, this got me thinking about the ring buckle system. I put one together based on the original system on Jeff's site, using a strap with a loop, a...
Blistex (I use it very often)
Headlamp
Water bottle
Camp shoes
Book or journal materials
Snack (something high-calorie for those really cold nights)
Warm hat
Judging by a review of other threads on this subject, it seems that the most succesul way to hammock the Smokies is to get up early, walk until late, and hope the shelter fills up so you can hang...
I have an almost new MSR MiniWorks EX filter for sale. I don't have the box but all parts are accounted for. I used the filter once for maybe two liters of water.
Sells for $85 at REI, Campmor,...
I have a Gregory Deva 60 women's pack in size extra small. Link is to this year's model. Bought it mid last year and it's never been used. It's blue and black.
REI specs this pack at 3600 cubic...
I'm sure the Blackbirds will be worth the wait no matter what. I'm just happy to be able to try one and support an innovative hammock maker.
May be time to think about a Skeeter Beeter or ENO with a bug net, something light, thin, and wide to get that material away from you.
Don't be sorry. It was an excellent report and I'm really excited about getting my hands on that Blackbird
Have fun in Vermont. :shades:
I get the same thing with my Claytor. You think you need the zipper undone further than you really do to exit. Since it's a long hammock it's hard to reach the sucker once you're back inside.
...
It would more than do it for me. :)
Good to have you aboard, eay.
These are the best forums I've ever found, with the nicest and most generous people I've met online.
Cheers to you all, and here's to many more good years for Hammock Forums.
The Gossamer Gear pads are great, but I doubt one will get you that low. Two might depending upon how cold you sleep. They're very light and thin and can roll up tight.
Yes, the whole family is swinging in the trees now. I wish could have gotten a picture of the dog climbing into the hammock! =o)
6.5 hours, according to MapQuest. Wow.
I'm still hoping some folks will be able to take me up on the hangout, be it at LBL or elsewhere. As long as I can get good directions to the site or I can...
Finally getting around to posting about our campout at LBL a couple weeks ago.
The site was excellent for a family hangout. The lake is just down the hill, plenty of sparse woods to play in, the...
Awesome tip.
You pretty well have your answers, but just to show you a more complete consensus:
To the trees. I'd suggest replacing them with better shock cord and a bit thicker guy line. Tiny knots are...
Hang it with some sag. If you can put it on a ring buckle system, do so. Then you can get in, adjust the sag, and repeat until you get it right.
I don't think you'd want to put a structural...
I do put the pad between the layers. I got a full length wide pad and cut it to torso length. I lay with my head above the pad. I found that with the pad at full length a lot of it slipped out from...
The Claytor Jungle. http://www.mosquitohammock.com/
I took the family over to Land Between the Lakes this week and hand a great little hang out. I found a spot that I think would be perfect for a hangout of just about any size. I'll post a trip report...
I have that same GG pad; used it this weekend in my Claytor down to 48 degrees. I was only briefly chilled once and I think that was more due to not tucking my quilt around me properly and turning...
I don't know if there's camping near their area, but there are elk in Land Between the Lakes. Backcountry camping is allowed just about anywhere in LBL and there may be spots near enough to the elk...
I'm not at all opposed to the Gorge area, but I've only been there once and then only to the natural bridge. You have a particular spot in mind? I'd like to see how far it is from my house.
As for...
Howdy, folks.
I'm taking vacation from 28 October to 5 November and I'd love to do some camping. I work every weekend outside of vacations so I'll miss the Mammoth Cave hang.
Anyone interested...
Neo, it's been a while since I've frequented these forums and I was happy to see, when I came back, that you were still around. Good to know you, man, and I hope we get to hang together some day.
My experience is limited to Claytor, Clark, and Byer. The Byer was way too small, I have a lot of little issues with the Clark, and the Claytor is simple, comfortable, and cheap.
Very interesting...
Not all of us... :D
I took the North American out in October. The overnight temps were in the high 50s with almost constant, strong winds. I was quite warm on top using a 40 degree bag as a quilt, but I had to put in a...
'Cause it's so pretty... =o)
In all seriousness, the Clark has a heck of a lot of features, probably takes a lot of work to produce compared to, say, a Claytor. Not that all of the features are...
There's no space between the layers.
The Claytor has a real simple design. I think it would be real easy to make one at home.
It's essentially three rectangles of material, all the same size....
The question seems fine to me. I think the issue at hand is whether or not one can be comfortable in cold temperatures with a pad. After my initial research into the subject I'd begun to think that I...
That would be nice. The bloody thing would be even heavier, but I do get some squeeze in the shoulders if I don't hang it and lie in it just right. A foot might do the trick.
