You'd be welcome.
Hate I missed seeing all you guys. Hope I'll see you at another one before you make your move Maz.
Sure glad to hear that!
I've been checking back several times a day (here & on Linville George .net) to see if anyone had herd how he was doing.
Hope we can.
One of you should contact Home Run so he can let the port-a-john people know that you are considering it so they won't pick it up before a decision is made.
Also, let them know at...
Glad you caught it before damage was done Crawldaddy.
If I'm not mistaken, I met you at a Hot Springs hang several years back, when Ed Speer was hosting them.
I see from the pictures PizzaMimie put on the planning thread that the trailer with hammocks was Timber & Gumbo's. Nice!
WOW!!! Super impressive on so many levels!
Sure do hope I can make it down there some day. I'd love to learn from you on all the planning details. And to see so many great folks in such a...
Thanks for starting the planning thread. Glad it turned out good there!
And thanks to Home Run, Hickery & others for taking the lead in planning this trip, as well as Happy Camper for a great...
Indeed! I'm glad Poppins is getting some enjoyment out of the weekend along with the others.
Still waiting a report about our injured hiker.
I talked to Home Run of the Hot Springs crew that departed from GHSP.
Two of their group of 10 left this morn. Now there are eight sitting in Maztrain's heated tent, drinking beer, having a good...
Any doc report on the LG accident?
Love Doctor, have you herd anymore from the Hot Springs crew or did you decide to join them?
Haven't herd anymore from Hot Springs.
But Hickery knows people with information!
No. I talked with Hickery for a while by phone today.
He's staying close to home unless they need him to drive an ambulance.
Keep us informed of any news from LG.
I think staying home is a good idea this weekend.
Thanks Cakes. Hope they are making lemon aid out of that lemon.
From what I've seen on local news, pretty slick with ice.
I'm sure they are going to be in no hurry to pick up the port-a-john.
Have you herd from anyone from Hot Springs?
I don't think there will be a charge for firewood. We'll ask.
As for the port-a-john, Ranger Marcia told me that the cost for renting it is the same for a month as it is a few days, so if there are...
Looking at the roads in the Piedmont of NC, I would suggest staying home if that's were you are.
Some snow & ice/sleet on the roads, with more to come.
Also, increasing winds.
Yes. That is correct.
Yes, there have been lots of group hangs at Hot Springs.
It's on the French Broad river.
Finally able to log in at work on cell.
I'm sorry for saying the park never shuts down. Thought I had been told that.
Called log cabin restaurant but no one there either.
Hickery @ Home Run...
Grindstone campground might be a possibility.
I love quarterbacking from my arm chair:)
I'm not sure that I would nail them to the posts (if anyone brings them) but I think I would lash them to the post.
Wouldn't take a lot to keep them there.
If no boards, tight rope would help.
I've been in there many times in snow & always in a two wheel drive.
They will likely be plowing & replowing the roads so you are not likely to be driving in deep snow but a layer of packed snow.
The parks phone & internet lines are out so you won't be able to call them but they are there.
GHSP does not close.
Nor does it close trails. They did years ago but changed their policy.
They know you guys are coming so I'm sure they have the snow plow ready.
Poppins, I guarantee you...
If anyone can throw in a little extra rope or strong cord it might come in handy for securing tarps.
And please... somebody come up with a better trail name for dimjim!
He's not dim at all.
Glad to be part of the team, even if I'm not there!
Cool! Good thing to have this weekend!
Another note from our Ranger friend, Marcia...
"Also, I'm sure you're aware, but the current snow forecast is calling for 1-3" today(Wed), 8-12" Fri & 3-5" Sat. Roads will be pretty bad as temps...
I talked to Hickery & Home Run by phone today.
Home Run had not been able to get in touch with the lady that took Ranger Marcia's place to confirm that they would be bringing a load of fire wood to...
Yeah, we ask people not to bring it from any state/area were it has been confirmed.
And according to the article Roach linked, it was first found in your state:scared:
" emerald ash borer beetle...
I took a friend up to Rhododendron Gap for a winter overnight one Feb, back before I discovered hammocks.
I don't know what the temps were while we were hiking but it got down to 5 below 0 that...
Be careful my friends.
Scott, sure am sorry to hear about the headaches as well as the headaches with insurance.
Dealing with insurance companies is no fun.
Yes, GHSP has their own scraper & they do plow the main park...
Home testing. Always a good idea.
Sounds like a good idea. Thanks.
For those hiking up to Thomas Knob shelter.
One mistake that is often made when winter hiking is getting sweaty.
Even if you are wearing all quick dry material, it's not good to get it saturated,...
I'm pretty sure eggs will freeze if temps get down into the teens & lower.
It works well to have an extra cooler in the car for dry goods that you don't want to freeze, including the eggs &...
If you need to add any more Gorilla tape to that SOB (or anything else) I remember last Jan the Gorilla tape wouldn't stick at all to the tarp.
I'm thinking it was because the glue on the tape was...
Hope you can make it too Scott.
I'll be you'll have a better time this go-round.
A Very Merry Christmas to you & yours!
The weather varies greatly for this winter hang but Zoomie, you are well covered with what you are bringing.
Personally I find it more challenging sometimes to stay comfortable while sitting &...

And I'm thinking I may have give Hickery the roll of raffle tickets after the Fall Festival, since he was more sure to be at the winter hang.
I suspect that Hickery will be bringing "Big Blue 2" (aka Son Of Blue).
Maybe we should plan to reimburse him for another roll or two of gorilla tape if he's willing to further reinforce it before...
