I figure 8 the main suspension line but for the guylines I like to use an overhand knot. I picked this idea up somewhere on the forums. Perhaps this thread. I just end up folding the guyline in half...
I'm kind of curious too I was trying to find a nice 30mile loop for the weekend. All my usual hiking buddies have other plans.
Pisgah, is nice. In some areas you are allowed to just camp in the forest off of the forest service roads.
In 7-10 days you could do the Foothills Trail on the SC/NC border. 7 hour drive from Jacksonville though....

I just got my bug net in the mail from Dutch.
The bug net is like a horizontal tube with a hole on the bottom to enter/exit.
I think most people like to have a ridge line on the hammock to keep...
Splicing is fun! :)
Wait, my sister lives in Pflugerville.... Are there really any trees out there? ;)
I think badco is saying he found that Kijaro tarp at Lowes for $52.
Welcome to the madness.....
There are a few threads on this UQ. It can be difficult because people need varying levels of insulation at night depending on how they sleep but it appears to be a mid 40's quilt....
Seems like kind of an odd shape, I wonder how far you could fold those edges in as pseduo-doors. In that price range/material there is always the Hennessy Hex. Which is also 10.5oz lighter.
Well...
I started with a Kelty Noah 9 and upgraded to a OES MacCat Deluxe and have been really happy with it. I'm also a 3 season camper and usually just get out on weekends, so I haven't seen any extreme...
Yeah that seems like a great combination of the simplicity of a strap system while allowing you to detach the suspension from the hammock.
What about Elephant Trunks? A similar idea but still allows you to use webbing instead of a rope against the tree.
I found something similar, I dislike companies with only FB pages though....
There are a few different ways to set up whoopie slings but here is a classic Shug video.
Yes I am pretty sure people in the redwoods carry extra long tree straps.
If you're concerned about the whoopie sling coming off the marlin spike hitch toggle you could use rated carabiners to join the webbing and the whoopie sling (example forum thread). This would...
I did what vmonarca suggested and made my own whoopie sling setup, but I enjoy making gear. I know that for simplicity some people really like the webbing and cinch buckle setups, really easy to use...
One cheaper place to cut some weight might be the bug net you could get a lighter one. For example the "Fronkey" style only weights 6.5oz
(savings of 8.5oz for $50)
I currently have the ENO and...
Weird here is another of these UV shields that was just posted in another thread. http://www.ticketothemoon.com/content/hammock-sleeve-0
I just remember thinking it sounded like a neat idea of you were leaving the hammock rigged up. I think snake skins are a fairly easy DIY project the question would be what to make them from.
I have a JrB TQ which uses omni-tape to form the footbox. I actually never pull the footbox open, so it seems like a sewn footbox would work for me too.
Though the JrB TQ has the option of being...
Do you have that new treated down (for example Activ-Dri) which is supposed to increase the water resistance? I suppose for really damp environments there are always the synthetic UQs.
I don't own a UQ protector because I plan to do what you mentioned hang low and pull the tarp in. I've never seen crazy weather where a protector would have helped but then again I'm a weekend kind...
I thought an UQ protector was to shield the UQ from rain blown under your tarp or water splashing up from below. I don't think it would help much against humidity.
I've never done it myself but the pictures and videos I remember seem to still tie a marlinspike hitch but use the carabiner instead of a toggle. Then you can clip the whoopie into the carabiner. I...
Sounds like replacing the toggle with a carabiner would be the way to go then.
I actually had both a AHE new river and a Mt Washington 3 for a while. They were both really nice quilts a big upgrade from my DIY 3/4 poncho liner UQ.
If you are willing to take the weight penalty the. It seems like an UQ would be the first one to get. You can use the sleeping bag, unzipped, as a top quilt.
When I set up my ridge line is always level. Only when I get into the hammock can I get a feel for how well I hit the suspension angle. When the angle is too flat the ridge line is really tight but...
I must be doing something unnatural when I roll over onto my side in my ENO....
Ah, I scrolled down just after posting and saw that tarp ridge line package. Watching the videos I see how he uses the prussiks to allow you to center the tarp. I started with a Kelty Noah 9 and had...
Which part is the whoopie sling the red cord or the blue? I was just curious thinking about the tarp rigging and the marlinspike hitch. 1+ for having a separate tarp suspension. I like my tarp up all...
Oh, I didn't mean to imply that you had to use shelters. I was just trying to think of reasons that people might favor pads over under quilts. Perhaps some people even enjoy shelters? :)

At home on my stand I switched to a rope that is more uv resistant. It was a simple change because weight wasn't a factor. I know in the past I've seen someone selling a UV resistant snake skin thing...
I'm pretty sure people do the AT with pads instead of quilts. It seems like one of those personal choices (cost can play a factor). Generally UQs are more comfortable but you can't go to ground in a...
Of the different hikes I've done in the area the Art Loeb is the only one I kind of wished I had a tent on. Spending a night out on Black Balsam or at the top of Cold Mountain would have been cool!...
I made the mistake of leaving a set of tree huggers out on my hammock stand and then taking them on a backpacking trip... UV damage caused them to just snap in half the first night. I ended up at...
I know when I've spliced zing it that tapering the ends by removing strands at intervals made a big difference. Trying to start the splice with the full size cord is really tough. I've recently been...
You're right Chatooga section is great, I keep meaning to go and actually walk the Chatooga trail... One of these days. My first time on the Foothills trail was actually a thru-hike of the whole...
This forum has tons of answers, I've spent hours reading about all kinds of hammock experiments. If you have specific questions the members are quick to chime in with options. You could always start...
It's fun to see people hiking the same area. Last weekend I took a co-worker on his first overnight backpacking trip and we did the Two Gorges Loop, spending the night on the Foothills trail at Lake...
When I added a ridge line to my ENO I just used some leftover amsteel from making a set of whoopies. You could just splice an eye on each end of the Zing-it and then feed your suspension through the...
Welcome to hammocking from down in the midlands!
It is the kind of standard top rail for theses kinds of stands. You take a chain link fence top rail which is 10' long I think and cut it in half. One side of the fence rail is swedged so you can put...
I'm not sure I can help much with measurements. I started with 6' long 1/2" EMT conduit for the legs and chain link top rail. But then I cut the top rail so that my ENO had the same sag as my ridge...
Sure I could try and get some pics up tomorrow.
Well I finally let my wife try the hammock and she said that she likes her Exped MegaMat 10 a bit better. A win for me, but heresy for a hammock site. Though I will admit that Exped is a really nice...
