I can tell you that the 2qzq UQ protector works great as a wind block. But it is important to get it hanging loose beneath you. Otherwise it can compress the UQ and exacerbate CBS. Wasn't intuitively...
The reason I said "not enough sag" is because I believe the issue has more to do with your weight, than your height. To get enough sag and keep the loaded height off the ground, you are going to have...
Not enough sag.
You can thin your silicone with orderless mineral spirits. This helps it wet out better. You can use the same concoction for seam sealing.
Hmmm, not sure about that. Do you have a link that shows those stats? Thanks!

I might dig a little trench and cook a fish sometimes, but otherwise it is my alky stove and freezer-bag cooking. As others have said, fires can be fun at night. But when I solo I try not to leave...
Whenever I hang things seem to get heavier - no process of lightening. However lightning is downright scary :)
In the upper elevations I stay of the hilltops. Pretty hard to sleep when a tree...
The incubator is a pretty close fit for a WBBB - almost looks intentional. The JRB is more generic.
Not down, but I've found this little pillow to give me a lot of flexibility for a low price. REI Traveler inflatable pillow. Just the right shape to help get your head tilted back. Lightweight and...
Yea I use the same moniker usually. I'm one of those crusty old guys full of opinions :)
I just started using a hammock early 2011 - primarily to get a better sleep experience. So far so good. I...
You can make a tarp for about 1/2 what you'd pay. But if you haven't worked with slippery silnylon before it could be a little frustrating. A good tarp is about $120.
Spectran-based rope (Amsteel,...

Too bad really. This site could be so much better if they opened it up. But they've chosen the wrong model IMHO. They should've monetized it by going with advertising. Closing it off to paying...
My scandium revolver rides in a holster that I clip to the ridgeline. The WBBB storage pocket isn't very usable with the HG incubator snugged up. The ridgeline seems to become a catch-all for things.
No, you don't need a ridgeline with a sil-nylon tarp. I know from experience that the material is plenty strong for major nasty weather. And a downside to ridgelines is they provide a water drip path.
Old thread, I know, but I thought this update would be helpful.
The weather finally cooled off here. I slept using the 3 season incubator at 30*F the other night. Upper body was warm, butt was...
Hmmm, 1/16" foam kept you "toasty" into the 40's???????
Were you sleeping in a 0*F synthetic bag? 1/16" of foam isn't much insulation.
My GG 1/4" Evazote pad worked till the low 40's. There's no magic - 1/4" isn't much insulation. A problem with the GG pad is that it is very expensive for what you get and it is very stiff and bulky...
You don't need a tarp ridgeline. Sil-nylon tarps work better without it.
Solo'ing is a lot of fun. The only way a person can determine if solo'ing is for them is to try it once or twice. Some simple mindset preparation, perhaps a bit of gear (e.g. SPOT) and go for it. I...
I like a regular Sil-nylon tarp. The material is very strong for the weight and handles high wind loads well. There are a number of tarp makers and you'll spend $100 plus a bit. Oware cat tarp is a...
I believe this is why the Warbonnet Blackbird has a foot box - it allows you to lie diagonally and close to flat.
The 1st night solo, I clutch my 44 mag and wake at every mouse fart. On goes my EOS on high as I scan for MAN EATING BEASTS FROM HELL. :D 2nd night I sleep pretty good and only wake for a potty run....
Make sure you've got the head and foot ends oriented correctly. The incubator is wider at the head end (brown clip). I have 50" shoulders and my incubator has hung perfectly from the get-go. I didn't...
I don't think you're gonna see much, if any, down shifting with 900fp down. 550 and 650 yes, but 800-900fp no.
I asked a similar question over in the hammock gear forum "How low can you go?" and...
I just bought a 3 season Incubator from Hammockgear. Since I'm trying to maximize sleeping comfort when using a hammock, I opted for full-length. A couple more oz of pack weight for sure, but I'm not...
First of all, I'm sorry if I've stirred things up if it hasn't helped sort stuff out.
Secondly, I believe it is more important to get on the trail than to fuss about gear.
Lastly, I'm no...
When the wind is blowing like crazy and it is just flat cold, pretty hard to beat a tent. You can get some tent-like tarps for the hammock - but it will never seal up like a tent.
Now I'm coming...
A tent/tarp is superior to a hammock in all ways EXCEPT comfort. A tent/tarp is cheaper, warmer, lighter, more roomy, better weather protection, etc.
I know this is a hammock forum, and we're all...
A hammock setup is quite a bit more expensive than a tent. Basically the hammock provides the sleeping platform, but you still need to provide a tarp, and extra insulation if you want to do cold...
This is getting to be a miserable forum.
If I post a positive experience with an REI Inflatable pillow for side-sleeping in a hammock, the thread gets deleted.
If somebody asks about pack...
Fortunately, (but not as scenic), the areas in Idaho I haunt are mostly lodge pole pine. The stuff goes in about 40 year cycles (burn, birth, growth, beetle kill, burn, etc.) so it never gets very...
This is more common than folks would like to admit. I was very picky about being able to side sleep in the WBBB (which I can) and I needed an REI Inflatable pillow ($20) to get the correct neck...
Well giggle all you want :)
I never get into snow unless I'm still backpacking in late September. It is kindof nice then, not many folks, skeeters are gone, streams are low, plenty of hungry...
When I opened the shipping box, I found the quilt in it's stuff sack, a page of instructions, and a rectangular, zippered, clear plastic storage bag. This might be something new. This storage bag...
That's really good to hear. I'll be very happy if I can handle upper 20's. I don't usually BP when it is that cold, but it has happened.
I was surprised at how easily it matched up to the Black...
I just recently received a 3 season Incubator. I really like the design as it popped onto my WBBB with zero adjustment. Unfortunately it has warmed up here and my only night sleeping with it was a...
Left side, same as home.
The Reflectix will work to 50*. Make sure your piece is wide enough for your shoulders. Reflectix will squish out after a handful of uses - it won't last all that long. If you have a double-layer...
Hammocking out west is still pretty new. The 1st time I saw a hanger was in Idaho, last year.
For the most part, hammocking is more expensive in the colder climates, heavier, and pretty much a...
Pretty much everything is Spectran isn't it? Isn't that what "Amsteel" is? Fishing line, bow strings, and climbing rope - all Spectran.
I can see how folks using knots for their hammock suspension would like a continuous ridgeline for their tarp - it lets them adjust it instead of moving the hammock. But if you use the strap&buckle...
I'd look towards Hammock gear if I were you. Not all quilt makers understand what being taller that 5' 6" is like. Also, if you want your quilt to do double-duty on the ground, you'll probably want...
A full-length eliminates much of the fiddling since it pretty much covers from end to end. E.g: the hammockgear incubator is 78" long, which is 5" longer than me. That means there is some insulation...
I bought a 1/4"x59"x39" GG evazote pad, have used it twice and consider it a waste of money. It is good to only about 45* by itself. It bunches up. It is very bulky. It is light - its only saving...
IMHO, right now the 3/4 length 3-season Phoenix from hammockgear is the best. Best length and best fill. Wildernesslogics 3/4 length is a better length, but uses inferior fill and as a result ends up...
I have a double layer hammock. I put the pad between the layers. Just the thin nylon and my body heat is enough to reduce condensation on the pad. Also the pad doesn't shift between the layers.
Is it taller than the REI? I haven't had a chance to look at either one yet. I just decided to shop at REI so that I can return it easily in case it sucks. I definitely appreciate the recommendation.
