2x6 is stronger, but more likely to twist if there is no top rail. Either type of wood is fine. If you get treated it will last a little longer...but painted wood is fine. I would recommend longer...

If you want longer usability, you can transfer it to tyvek.

It is nice to have a bit of give in your lines. It lowers the chances of tearing your tarp...and usually helps to get the tarp to lay smooth. some people add a brake line of braided line that stops...
