+1 on the figure-8 knot. Or you can also use the Water Knot to create a loop which is just as secure as the Fig. 8. In either case make sure to leave several inches of tail for safety.

Figure-8 bend, this is an alternative to double fisherman for binding two ropes.

I use figure-9 for my tarp setup, in case of loss or hardware failure i use these as backup - tie one end of the ridgeline using siberian hitch and tie off the other end using the farrimond friction...

Imo its just preference. I've been using recently the Siberian(Evenk) hitch to hook up to trees. Basically a fast tying, secure and quick-release hitch.

Knots can weaken line, not sure how much...
