+1 for Balsam Mt
Trailfest is April 20-21. Lets hope the hang is the same dates. For those coming from the TN side, they plan to close a bridge on US70 on April 10 making a long detour.
Great trip. I'm leaving Sunday for Siler's Bald then down to Elkmont.
If you come around the week of Fathers Day in June Gregory Bald is a must see. I'll be making reservations for CS13 Sheep Pen Gap in a few days to see the flame azalea show....
Can't really say about Lakeshore, haven't done much on NC side yet. I do know that 37 and 36 on Big Creek almost always shut down to bears in the Summer. 35 was down all Fall and Winter. 15, 26, and...
There are three shelters off the AT, Kephart on Kephart Prong and Laurel Gap near Sterling Ridge and Mt LeConte too. Good luck getting away from people here in the Summer, they're everywhere. Its...
I was able to regulate the temps by striping down and leaving a leg exposed. My pack was still in Winter mode and this trip was last minute.
Spring has come early to the Smokies so its time to lose the winter fat and hit the trails. I started this one with a motorcycle ride up to Cades Cove and hit the trail head at the rear of the picnic...
Ground hog stakes work well enough for me in snow and soil
Good luck with campsite 35 it was never reopened from last year due to bear activity. It seems the same sites get closed down every year in late spring/early summer not to reopen until the first...
Franks Bell is almost a class 4 up from the campground.
Will be doing the Smokies sometime this Summer.
The weather station at the office recorded 10*F, I recorded 7*F and the lowest reading I heard was -2*F. So somewhere between the highest and the lowest was the actual temp.
My wife and I work at the same company but slightly different hours so at the end of the day I would have an hour and half to wait. Off to the side of the parking lot I spyed a couple of trees and...
Still no TQ. Rescheduled delivery tomorrow, will be up later in the afternoon.
No. I had hopes the TQ would come in so I could try it out first instead of backpacking and testing it in the backcountry. Even if it does come in tomorrow it will be after lunch and that wouldn't...
Wanted to go up tomorrow but still waiting on my TQ, supposed to be delivered by FedEx tomorrow sometime. Hope the snow holds off til I get there.
Welcome, theres quite a few bikers/hammockers here. Check out the trip planning some guys are already thinking Spring.
Looks like trailfest has been moved to the weekend of April 16th.
Yep I have wood to bring! I just hope my winter burrow gets here in time!
My wife broke her ankle two years ago while car camping at Hunting Island SC so if she goes with me its by car since she can't hike in anymore. Otherwise I prefer to hike in usually solo.
Just saw this is going on that weekend too. http://friendsofroanmtn.org/Winter%20Rally%20folder%20%202-1-11.pdf
Trailfest is the week prior to May 6th for Hot Springs  and Sunday is Mothers Day
295lbs and no problem. Now go to sleep.
Thanks alot JRB. This really is a community!
First stream crossing you make with them you'll realize how useful they are.
I can bring Ball Park angus beef hot dogs. Plus firewood, Coleman 3 burner stove
Was going to stay on Scott Mt above Cades Cove but thunderstorms and wind advisory convinced me to stay home. Still raining here made the right call.
a video would be hilarious :D
If I'm thawed out after Grayson Highlands by then I'll go.
Sure there's safety in numbers. I trek alone alot in the Smokies but I know my way around plus I'm not a fast hiker and in winter conditions thats probably best. If it works out I would make it to...
I'm learning to ride. This is my first bike a 1999 Honda Shadow ACE 750. Got it in Oct on ebay only has 10K miles and...
I carry a pinnacle and have no complaints. Rides well took it to Gregory Bald last June 21mi with a 4000' climb in two days. Legs hurt but back was in good shape.
I was thinking of parking at Elk Garden and coming over to Grayson with a night at Thomas Knob of course weather conditions have the final say. 4mi to the shelter and then 5mi to the campground via...
Coming down in the TN Valley. Mt Leconte in the Smokies is heading to a 20"+ snowfall
The only drive in campground open after the 1st in the Smokies is Cades Cove. Smokemont usually is open on the NC side through the winter but is closed for renovations.
Welcome from down the valley in the shadow of the Smokies.
THe title of the op is "ridding for fowl weather" where it should have been rigging.
While not technically a hang or a camp here is a great chance to experience the Smokies in Winter when to crowds of tourist are gone. Rooms are cheap this time of year and all activities are free of...
1) Mt Wash 4 underquilt- mmmmmmmmmm toastie!
2) Jetboil Fash- hot water in seconds
3) Yard sale kayak for $50 and doing a class 2 on the first time out ever and not rolling over priceless!
If one were to overstuff a TQ with an additional 6oz of 800 down in addition to base amount of 16oz what would be the new temperature range assuming 16oz was rated to 0*F? The reason I ask is due to...
Just ordered a Winter Burrow so I'm thinking about it. WWW has the final say, Work, Weather, Wife :)
Why have to wait til next year. Love hiking the Smokies in the winter. In January Pigeon Forge puts on its Wilderness Wildlife Week, a full week of guided hikes, workshops and seminars all FREE...
I got it too even the same color. Great hat, very warm.
I'll take it! My email is email@example.com
Just saw on the http://www.nps.gov/grsm/planyourvisit/temproadclose.htm Mt Sterling campsite is closed due to aggressive bear activity
I've got to work. Sorry :(
