I have the hammock in the first picture and love it! It's my fulltime hammock now. Robert at Trippy Gear is doing some great work and always willing to try new ideas.

I make draw cord channels by folding grosgrain over the edge of the piece I am attaching it to. But, before sewing it on, I either sew a buttonhole or install a grommet. I prefer the buttonhole, but...
I use 7/16" for my suspension. I bought some 1/8" to try a continuous ridge line because I was looking to span more than 20' and felt the 7/16" was too light for the job. I agree, it does seem too...
Here's a handy trick: with ridgeline intact, lay out your hammock on the floor/ground. Starting at one end, walk to the other in normal even steps, counting as you go. Add one more step to the count....
Since moving to sleeping full time in my hammock, I no longer have the pain in my shoulder and hips that a mattress would inflict nor the loss of circulation in my arms. Plus, my lower back...
Getting new gear is always inspiring :) Enjoy!
This is a huge and varied subject, and your question is fairly vague. With no idea what your intended conditions are like, it's difficult to give specific suggestions. I suggest you take some time to...
Use 12-strand paracord to reconstruct the suspension, while attaching it to the hammock. The knot attaching to the ring is a double clove hitch.
Flip the hammock over and switch your head end. I find I need to do this every 6 months or so.
Yeah, I wouldn't use flannel or fleece in a hammock I was packing into the woods, but the OP was talking about an indoor hammock. ;)
Good luck with your idea. Be sure to come back and share it with...
While I don't understand why someone wouldn't just sew the foot box, I do like the drawcord idea. Sew a length of 1 1/2" wide ribbon along the bottom of the TQ to make a channel, run drawcord through...
First, Welcome to the Forums - and the wonderful world of Hammocking!
I've never used a Speer hammock, much less the velcro model, but it seems like any benefit from the conversion to a zipper...
Perhaps you could make two hammocks: one out of ripstop, the other out of flannel. Make the flannel slightly larger (3-4") thatn the ripstop on all measurements. Then, lay the flannel inside the...
I've found using the SOL Escape Bivvy to make quite a difference in temp ratings. The combo of weather resistance, reachability, and heat reflection is really effective. It's a bit confining, which...
I like modular systems! :)
That's my understanding
I use one of the green bags (patrol?), but I modified it so the hammock runs through the bag. This leaves the insulation useful on all sides. I'm working adapting an SOL Escape Bobby as an outer...
After trying several types of setups, I found draping blankets over a ridgeview to be the most comfortable for full-time, indoor top insulation. I just the type and number according to the season. I...
I think I may have picked it up at Walmart. Or maybe Big Lots. I just know it didn't cost very much.
I'll trade you a piece of blue gortex (56"x40") for that rig, just the way it is. I bought this piece last fall to make some gaiters and never got to it. PM me if you want to deal.
I have one of those zippered neoprene glasses case with a snap hook on one end. I just snap it to my ridgeview and slide it up above my head. Keeps them protected and easy to find in the dark....
Mt Pleasant is a great place for hammock camping! There are so many areas- from top to bottom- that are suitable for hanging. Having the AT pass through the area makes it all the better. :) Nice job...
Thanks. A good thing is worth sharing. Besides, the more people I can get hanging, the more opportunities I have to hang with someone ;)
More great ideas! Thanks :)
Thanks for the great ideas, folks! I think I'll try Mike Davis' idea first, since I already have all the materials, and see how the little guy does. Then, go for the other hardware, if that ends up...
I recently made a hammock for my 5 y/o nephew. Just a simple gathered-end, using amsteel fixed loops to gather then ends. I'm trying to come up with a super simple suspension that would allow him to...
The pennies sound like a good idea : )
The Hummingbird Hammocks look pretty small. I believe they are using Spectra on the suspension. I would think you would also want a bug net; Z-packs is selling ultralight netting at .7 oz/Sq.Yd. ....
Hammock gear varies as much as ground gear. Ground gear can vary from 4lbs just for a tent to 10 oz. for a tarp. The search for an ultralight hammock kit is still being pursued, with varying degrees...
I suppose one could stitch 1" loops of string on the outside of each the four "corners" of the net. Then you could insert sticks as desired. I'm going to have to try this! The only thing is the style...
Suddenly, my Altoid tin collection has added value ;)
Old dog, thanks for sharing your experiences with all of us. Sorry to hear those memories have been tarnished with all the government's interference. Going out to the woods should be a simple thing....
I thought the video was interesting, but it made me curious what kind of material was used for the tarp. Also, I found myself enlightened watching how he used the char cloth in the tin to light his...
Oh, I'll just be hanging around. ;)
I've been thinking about sewing a patch on each side and installing a small grommet or eyelet, then inserting a slender 2' rod as a spreader bar. Still trying to decide what to use on the ends that...
I push a chopstick through the middle of the braid, for the length of the bury, to open it up. Then, I use a length of solid copper wire (house wiring), folded in half, to pull the end I want to bury...
I used to try to taper, but then found out about using a knitting needle or chopstick to open the braid. I haven't found the need to taper since then.
You could try hanging the hammock with a little more slack. I have noticed some hip/shoulder ache if I pull my hammock too tight.
Just received a 4"x22" piece of titanium for making a folding twig burner of my design!
Titanium Joe out of Canada - good people to buy from. :)
Interesting! I've been thinking of making a fleece balaclava for the upcoming colder season. Now, I think I'll make it a bit baggy, so it can catch my breath, rather than let it all pass through....
Sure hope there aren't any flying tortoises out there!
You could go with two 6' and one 3', all done up with sewn loops on both ends. Use can the two 6' straps regularly and patch in the 3', should you need extra length on one end.
Left-to-right, right-to-left. If you're hanging, you're alright. :shades:
Probably better for car camping, but has anyone tried a diy "swamp cooler" air conditioner? I don't know if they're any good, but if they do what I've read about them, I imagine setting up a winter...
An alternative on the site selection is to set yourself up on a ridge or where the predominate winds might come from. I've also used my tarp to catch and funnel winds down the length of the hammock...
The Pines Campground in Ashby Ma
Willard Brook State Forest in Ashby MA
both very nice!
It helps if you tie the drip line to your suspension at a point under your tarp and at least a few inches from where the suspension attaches to your hammock. ;)
Hey, that looks like fun! Pole driving! It could be a new group activity at hangs. :D maybe hangers could drive poles for future camp shelters in exchange for campground fees ;)
Go ultralight. Not only will your pack be lighter, but it will also be smaller. Both attributes will make it easier and more comfortable having it in your hammock with you. From there, a couple of...
I'm curious, does anyone see a bridge hammock being basis for the ultimate hammock?
