With this many people interested surely we can get a group hang to happen soon!
We could start with a list of potential hang sites. Rattlesnake, Valens, and Algonquin have worked well in the past. Any other suggestions?
Also when are people available? Anytime? Certain...
Hey thanks for reading everyone!
@ Jayson: "hideyhole" what a great word to describe it.
@Brian : Agreed, another overnighter is long past due. Isn't it impressive how I managed to make my...
Hey Charlie, I loved your post! It's great to have you aboard HF and thanks for taking the time to share your thoughts. What you wrote, it speaks to me in a big way.
I was mulling over some...
The first whoopies I made I didn't put beads on. I'm thinking some small key rings?
A good thread on this topic here

I've been needing to unwind after this work week from hell. I decided to take Saturday...
I'm an avid fan of MEC. If you live local to the stores they are excellent to examine gear, staff are very helpful and aware of their products. Amazing return policy and warranty. Excellent...
I found it amazing how my brain plays back the feel of being in a hammock long afterwards.
No matter how small the swinging movement is in my hammock, even as I'm laying still, I sense it long...
If you want camo, the surplus PL is cheaper than buying the fabric and making one. It's pretty thin, so you'd need to double it in half for warmth. I recall hearing they can give you insulation to...
TSC stores: 950ml $21
contains 0.5% Permethrin
UltraShield EX Fly Spray
Wilson Home Pest Control Spray ( $10 for a liter spray bottle) most of the popular hardware stores list it for...
It's always so useful to see the list of what others are packing. I'm still working on putting a lighter weight pack together. Thanks for sharing!
Lofty, what's the finished UQ weigh? Very inspiring stuff! Thanks for documenting your process. I must admit I've been a little reluctant to chop up my old sleeping bags to do this. But I'm pretty...
Count me IN!
Originally, my pseudo-name came from a song by Squarepusher called "Dimotane Co." from his 1996 album called "Feed Me Weird Things". But I misspelled it. Oops.
You can listen to the track here: ...
Good to hear the Ontario hangers are alive n kicking! Another group hang soon would be awesome. It's been at least a month since my last hang out.
If you're near Hamilton, Guelph, Waterloo area check out Len's Mill. They often have a pile of closed cell foams varying in widths, densities and thicknesses from 1/16" thick and up. Each store...
IMHO you're best off packing and wearing some fleece layers. It's multi purpose that way (wear it while doing chores around camp etc) , and gives you the flexibility of using it or not. Lining a...
Nice work and very inspiring! I hope to try making one soon.
I enjoyed your video. Thanks for taking the time to put it together. I hope to go to MAHA some day soon.
I've often read that a fleece sleeping bag liner can get you another 10 degrees or so added to the rating of your sleeping bag. IMHO it's not enough for staying warm on most nights, just used on...
Pads are easy to come by, inexpensive and lightweight. If it gets wet, it still works, just wipe it off. If it gets damaged it still works. Reflectix and closed cell foam are both good options....
I used a 3mm cord so I think that's like 1/8th inch. I also have my shock cord suspension doubled on all four corners. I gotta get my act together and get some pics made of it and post them!
I tried working with an 1/8 inch thin foam insert into my underquilt, hoping to boost it's rating. I found it left small gaps where cold air came in. It didn't pull as snug under me as the quilt,...
I've read posts saying how it improved the warmth of their underquilt and such.
The problem with the stuff is how easily it tears.
Just brainstorming here, but I wonder if by sewing it against...
It's so very true. I often see these moble homes set up with sat TV, car camping families with portable TV and DVD, electric coffee makers and so on. Thats just not camping to me.
Some light...
I'm thinking that maybe it has something to do with how hammockers aren't afraid to try something different. In my life so far, camping and backpacking has always involved tents and such and that's...
Hey guys, any thoughts would be helpful here.
How many lbs for top and bottom insulation is reasonable for backpacking?
Is a 2lb sleeping bag and a good down underquilt (another 1lb)...
Has hammock camping helped you with workplace survival? What camping creature comforts have you managed to backpack to work?
Seriously, I do think I'm surviving at work better now that I've...
I love it! Thanks for taking the time to put it all together into such a detailed trip report. I'm hoping to do parts of the Bruce Trail soon.
I found prequilted material for $6.99 a yard that is nylon quilted to poly batting. I couldn't resist giving it a shot. I bought bias tape for edging, 3 mm shock cord, cord locks, and some black...
I've heard of people layering in a space blanket into their top or under quilt construction or inbetween the underquilt and hammock. This stuff could be used in a similar way. It is said to add a few...
I've heard before about polyester being preferred to nylon for webbing but how does one tell the difference?
Also if the webbing stretches during the night, at most it's going to only be less than...
Just make sure you sew the loop well. There's no point buying 1600lb webbing and having the stitching in the loop tear apart with the stress.
This is a great question. Whats the thinnest lightest webbing for tree straps that can handle the stress and load.
For example on strapworks.com it lists polyester webbing; the smallest is 3/8...
I just love Ottawa! It's a big playground for the great outdoors. You live in a wonderful city. Lots of culture and so many restaurant patios. :shades:
For just getting started as a hanger you...
I tried making a 12 footer gathered end. It's super comfortable but it seems too long for my tarps. You know how they say measure twice cut once, so I thought I'd try it before trimming it down...
The choice might really depend if you're hoping to backpack, or going car camping... I have a -10c sleeping bag with basic poly fill, and it's ridiculously bulky and not useful for backpacking. But...
I saw that I could get a quilt poly fill for about $2.50 a yard at 60 inches. Cheap stuff, and it's easy to find locally. I'm curious about using it too. How much heavier would be than something...
Welcome! I'm pretty new at this myself. It sure can be a bit confusing, all the info on HF.
You can learn lots at a group hang if you come by to see everyone's setup. The Ontario hangers are a...
The MEC Viator down quilt caught my eye today. I like the price at $132. Very tempting to get to use for a winter underquilt.
Heres the specs:
- 575 duck down. queen size
- When folded in...
The DIY tarp was a very rewarding project for me.
If you have a sewing machine, and know how to use it (or willing to learn) then you're set!
I spent under $30 and made a tarp I feel is worth...
Sounds like the trip was a success! Well done guys! Brilliant photos as always [o]TTeR, thanks for taking the time to share. What a great group shot with the HF flag. An overnight low of -26c...
Have you ever done a hang at work? (and not get fired )
I've had a few really long evenings at work so far this month, and was feeling the need for a rest. So I looked around for ways to...
Fleece sure is interesting because it's cheap and easy to obtain. However most opinions seem to be that to get the same amount of insulation when compared with down, it's much heavier. Also it's...
Here's two popular places that have a possible alternative to IX:
Uhaul cushioning foam 12 inch x 40 ft. 3/32 thick $4.95
FoamsealR Sill Gasket - 5 1/2" X 82' X 3/16" $9.69 from Home Depot...
So to add more to the IX circus....
many comments from people who have it, say that it looks identical to the foam used to pack items, or flooring underlay, sandwiched between two layers of thin...
Yes, I'm also surprised you could let it sit for 3 days after mixing and not end up with a jello. Mine began to set very quickly after I mixed it. The left overs I tried storing in a sealed jar but...
Foams have a wide range of R values depending on the size and density of the bubbles, as well as the gas used to make them.
I was searching the OP link to the manufacturer to see if the R value...
I was thinking about Climashield APEX or Primaloft One, but it appears that there's only a few places online I can buy the best quality synthetic insulation, and each of them want $25 shipping to...
