Well put. One of the huge things I took from my hike as well. The simplier the better. I estimate that I carry an extra pound or two just to make things easier. Well worth it to me.

I was just going to view and post just to add another view and post, but I found something to add.
With the buckles locking up, also check how tight the know you are using to the buckles from the...
Or as much as camo!
Nothing to add other than I click on this thread to be the 700th post and you beat me to it.
Leaving shortly. On hold with verizon now to suspend my cell phone.
btw happy 2K post to me,:D
No that sounds like a James Bond Theme. I can see why Hooch shouldn't be a mod.:D
Hmm I don't think either of us will ever know the answer to that one.:D
To keep this going.
I had 2 hammocks setup last weekend, one for me and another for my dad. They where exactly the same. He hung his and I hung mine. I got in mine with no issues and he got...
And still on topic, how did that happen?
The anchor hitch I was using made the rings tight, the ascender knot allowed me to tie them a little looser. I may have been able to do this with the anchor hitch, but I like the ascender knot...
I noticed another thing with the rings today. I think that the tighter your knots are the tighter the rings are together, of course. The effect of tighter knots seemed to be little or no slippage...
I switched out for the ascender knot today. I know have it on the ridgeline to the ring and the hammock support line to the ring. It is a lot easier to use. It does not tighten up and make the...
I think I will have to try the ascender knot. The anchor hitch that I am using now makes the rings harder to use.
Has anyone tried clams? Similar to the ones you see on roof rack or NRS straps. I am thinking that would be the easiest if they would be strong enough to hold.
I hung in the backyard the night before. It was just looking like rain and I did not feel like it. Besides that's why I put a hammock stand in my bedroom. I actually ended up sleeping with a...
I used my ring system and straps on my hammock stand last night. The easiest way I have found so far to attach it to the stand. The only way to sleep inside when the A/C is broken.
I started out without the biner. I experienced what I can best discribe as the webbing welding to itself in the loop. The force from me using it from one night appeared to fuse the webbing together...
Another vote for the anchor hitch. I use that on my ridgeline and hammock supports. Works good enough so far.
I measured 12 on mine. I do not want to go shorter. I hung from trees over 18' apart with only stretching issues. The longer straps also give you the ability to wrap around the treees multiple...
Tubular webbing is heavy and absorbs water. Poly webbing can also be a bit heavy. Both are available at REI or climbing/outfitters. Ed Speer sells good nylon webbing for a good price. The nylon...
Did you happen to catch the weight? I would drop the cash if it was a good savings. I feel like I am at or close to the point now that I have to drop some cash to save any real weight.

I am debating right now whether or not I want to spend the $35+ to add it right now.
The warbonnet guy told me he found sprectra webbing at a climbing site. It weighed a little less then nylon, did not stretch, and had a 4000 lbs load rating. With a cost of $.80 a foot.
I'm not sure if it does. I thought some people said they did not need it, but I do.
I haven't tried it with 2 biners but I don't see why it would not work. All the rings do is provide friction to hold the straps.
Yeah thats hidden in somwhere in the 36 pages of posts. But I also learned that the hard way.
I also found out something while I was laying in my hammock Thursday night. I was using my speer webbing for the first time. I was hanging on trees around 16 or so feet apart. This is why I love...
I have done that a few times. You need to put a slip knot in the extra webbing after the rings. That keeps the extra from slipping back through the rings. Everytime I forget I end up on the ground.
I feel you there. When I'm playing around with my hammock stand, I pile up pillows and blankets underneath. Learned this one the hard way.;)
I've done box with an X as Jeff said. I have also done 5 rows of zig zag stitches. I went forward and reverse a couple times going from small to large zig zags. IMO both work the same, at least so...
Might be.
For now I am happy with an anchor hitch on the rings for the ridgeline and hammock support, and a larkshead for attaching the support rope to the hammock.
I am trying out putting a...
My attempt at a double sheet bend did that to me.
I think we need a 'smile' that implies being dropped.
I learned that with my old skins. I have since parted ways with them. Look into the anchor hitch. IMO it is easier to untie after you spend some time in the hammock than the bowline.
You could probibly find cheaper ones, but getting ones with a rating for an oz would be tough.
Most of the force is on the back of the strap opposite the hammock. I don't think the biner would be putting much on the tree.
All of your weight talk got me worried. I checked and my descending rings from mountaingear.com weigh .4oz each or 1.6oz total. The same ish as yours.
A side story on weight, I contacted my...
Hey I would have rounded.:p
Could be some good looking modern art.
That is one monster of a machine. 2000 stitches per minute. That's rediculous.
So that is a walking foot. I really need to read up on this sewing thing. I like to consider myself kind of a folk tailor.:o
$100 should get you a good machine. If you want to spend I little more, I spent $250 an got a killer machine from the late 50's.
On the homemade thing I am working on it. The materials for the...
Sounds like there is some over engineering that can be done. That would hold close to 5000 lbs. Sounds like my kind of math.:p
Hmm. Ring buckles on my pack hipbelt.
I would not use those. I weigh 220+ and have snaped 500 paracord very easily. I usually design a working load of 1000 lbs into my system. I think most people use 700. You put very close to that...
That's a pretty good price. The ones I found were $.14 per foot. I wonder what the weight and diameter is.
I'll have to look into those rings next time. Mine are about 2" in diameter. Narrow ones would be nice.
Good point. I am going to leave my straps a little long anyways.
Cool the closet REI to me is about a 5 hour drive to MI.
One things that I saw on my 1 night with the rings is that I put a lot of stress on the bark. They were thick soft bark trees though. ...
I tried out my ring setup last night for the first time. I am pretty happy with it. It is the quick setup with a lot of adjustablity that I am looking for.
A side note. It may have been just...
Interesting project. I'll have to see how the stuff sack idea works out. I am thinking that I can pack my gearskin using 5 stuff sacks the same size. One for bag and sleeping clothes, one for...
