Well - I bit the bullet and hung from my questionable tree straps at work today.
The "trees" were a couple of 3"(75mm) square steel columns in the lower floor office.

Icecream buckets - hole in the middle of the bottom - tie off a bit of stick, like a toggle - bury 1' down. Held up in 25 knot wind and a bigger tarp than we use with our hammocks.
