Another thing ... make sure what you sleep in isn't sweat soaked damp (I speak N. Carolinian ;) )
I usually carry those synthetic Long Johns just to sleep in as well as the dry socks.

Depends ... down that low usually my thick wool socks, good synthetic long johns and my Black Rock cap. That usually works for me.
I've gone comfortably into the 20's with my 3S Crowsnest (Phoenix), a small foot pad, and an old Camp5 down bag converted to a TQ. I've now got a 3S Burrow and I know it'll beat that old Camp5...
That should have more than kept you warm. Sounds like besides the tarp not keeping the wind off of you ... you might not have had the UQ properly snugged up around you ... which could have resulted...
