Benton MacKaye Trail (BMT) is about 300 miles and is through the Appalachian Mountains. Lots of hammock / back-country camping opportunities.

I went thru this same thing a couple of years ago. Made several tablecloth hammocks. Made amsteel continuous loops with carabiners. Bought straps, made the kids sit thru "marlin spike hitch" class....
