Wowzers...The Snugpack is over 46.5 oz!
Thanks for the quick input. I'll check these out.
Hey! My plan was to have a 0 & 40 (3/4 length?) UQ with a 20 TQ. I also have Frankenquilts from JCP jackets (maybe 50 degree).
I'm changing my set up a bit to have a 0 and 40 degree UQ. In considering the options for a 40 I wanted to look at possibilities in the synthetic insulation. I've been watching the for sale section...
I do not (outrageGIS offers GPS data for the Sheltowee). I might have some after April if I decide to carry GPS. The section from
Cumberland is pretty straight forward.
The green on the...
I assume you're thinking about doing a one way, 3 day, section of the Sheltowee. I don't have a map in front of me. But, I think you'd be looking at a lil over 10 mi/day (15 mi?). Certainly...
J3bags and I did a couple nights along the Sheltowee Trace.
TRIP REPORT HERE
+1 on the Sheltowee and Red River Gorge.
Some discussion on this HERE
How many miles a day and what conditions do you like or dislike? For example, RRG is very cool and unique area, but can be...
I wouldn't recommend hiking many places in The Gorge in the dark; places can be dangerous and hard to find.
Thanks. I have some of the recipes I use in the link in my signature.
Just some thoughts. I'm game for whatever - I'm just excited to get to go and that backpacking season has started!
Option 1: Slave Falls/Twin Arches Loop
This area should take us past some rock...
Looking at the map it looks like most of the Slave Falls to Charit Creek Trail follows the creek (from the Sawmill trail head to the lodge).
I know the lodge sits on the creek and there's a great...
J3B - I'm in. Maybe we can get some feedback on possible routes.
We are looking at a 2 night loop from the Middle Creek trail head past Slave Falls, Needle Arch, Twin Arches to Charit Creek Lodge...
What ticks? :)
You're too kind.
Here's my trip report from a group hang at Red River Gorge. Thanks to CorrosiveCookie for organizing!
Here's my trip report and pics.
Man, I wish I could. But, I don't think I can swing that weekend with all the family stuff going on. :(
The audio was pretty muffled for me. Sounds like you have the water proof back on the camera case.
We hiked that same area in May.
Great to see some familiar faces and meet some new people. What a great weekend to be in the woods. Hope to see you all again soon!
On a sadder note, there was a a young man that died at Chimney...
Might not be able to get to the arch. But, I think you could make it out there to camp.
I'm gonna shoot to camp on the ridge leading out to the arch. Let me know if you're wanting to hangout.
I plan on heading down Friday (afternoon) and will prolly hang out somewhere around Star Gap Arch. Saturday I'll hike back toward the group site.
Not too hard to find and pretty cool. It does require a little bit of a scramble...Unless there's another way I don't know about.
I'm thinking about going out Friday...
I was thinking pineapple upside down cake too until I saw the cheesecake!
I'll try to make it. I'll check back when it's closer. Since it sounds like were car camping maybe I'll lug out the Dutch Oven for some cornbread or something.
Thanks! I'll have a look when I go to the Kroger this week!
BTW - I hope to get to hike the AT (prolly in sections) some day.
Please tell me more about the saffron orzo with summer sausage.
Is the date still this weekend (Nov 14)? If so, that's the same weekend as the Rough Trail Ultramarathon. Between the good weather and marathon there will likely be a pretty good number of people...
I'm not sure. I think the date is 11/13 - 11/15.
I'm watching the this and would like to attend if able.
I feel like when I go through the Nada Tunnel I'm transported to another place.
Was there over the weekend and it was hoppin'! Fortunately, we didn't see many people off trail.
Yea, I'm sure it's acquired multiple names (I've heard Hanson's Point referred to as Pinch em Tight Ridge).
Still lotsa stuff I haven't seen yet.
Possible sites for day hikes from Tunnel Ridge Rd.
The Veranda (unmarked trail)
Hanson's Point (unmarked trail)
Star Gap Arch (unmarked trail)
Like KYHiker said, they're hard to miss once you're on Tunnel Ridge Rd. Just keep an eye out on the left as you go in.
Pinch'em Tight Latitude: 37.80529033 Longitude:...
There is a limit of 6 people at single sites and 12 at double sites. I think if don't park at the site & you park in the hiking/backcountry parking you have to have an overnight permit.
IMO most campers/backpackers would not like S-Tree due the ATV and locals traffic.
I think most of the campsites would lend themselves to hammocks though. If you go, keep in mind that there is no...
Backpacking or car camping?
I should have included RRG in our considered list. I'm very familiar with RRG. We make look for something more in-between and less crowded.
Looking for some ideas on places to meet a friend from north GA. I'll be coming from southwest OH and looking to meet somewhere in between.
So far on the list is Big South Fork or somewhere in...
That's a sweet spot! And, it's close to the Charit Creek Lodge (this is both good & bad).
Sorry for the typo - I meant now.
Unfortunately, I cannot edit my post.
I think camping at Jake's Place is not prohibited. Might want to double check before making plans to set up there.
There are a couple well established campsites along the Clear Fork River not far from the Burnt Mill trail head, before you join the JMT. I don't recall any established sites after joining the JMT. ...
HA...Yea, sometimes I wonder if it's my scale or others' that's off!
Before I do another week long, 15 mile/day, trip I need to cut a few El Bees.
Yea, I would like to start seeing a list (detailed w/weight) of peoples gear. I hear people say they have X lb base weight and I know what I have and can't figure out why I can't get there. I need...
Do you have your gear list posted anywhere? I'm curious to compare to see what I can do to break the 15# mark. I prolly just need to sit down and really think about what I need/want. I know I...
Dang, it's barely June and there's winter talk! :scared:
Thanks everybody for the confirmation. Now, I just have to decide upon what length dog bone to carry. Currently only carry about 12-18" one (what I hang my camp shoes with).
No doubt that time, money & resources are a big issue. I'm not surprised that the trail has some downed trees. It would be nearly impossible to keep it 100% clear. What surprised me was some of...
I figured this wasn't anything knew and assumed there must be some solution to this issue.
I have 6' tree straps (loop in one end) to use with a marlin spike hitch. I find the 6' is usually plenty but, have had a few times where the spot I was eyeing had too big of trees.
I carry a...
We discussed Maudes Crack and decided against it. We thought for the distance off trail it wasn't it worth it for this trip. We hope to return to the area at some point and just backpack the BSF...
