No way, as others have said, the air will not insulate you at all from ambient temperatures. If you want to use an air pad, I'd only consider using an insulated pad. Still, I think you'd be better...

No way, as others have said, the air will not insulate you at all from ambient temperatures. If you want to use an air pad, I'd only consider using an insulated pad. Still, I think you'd be better...
Has anyone played around with using a warmer UQ for the given temperatures and a lighter TQ?
I am thinking that since the insulation under you is more important for warmth than what is on top of...
Wow, you're getting into trouble when looking at the depths of my gear want list... Here are the highlights:
HG Incubator 20 UQ
HG Incubator 40 UQ
HG Burrow 20 TQ
HG Burrow 40 TQ
HG Standard...
That makes me smile.
That's my plan--one piece at a time until I have the gear I want.
Huh. Interesting trick with the water bottle as a lantern. Might have to give that a try. In terms of changing headlamp...
Thanks everyone. Looking again at how I have my gear packed, the PLUQ and the sleeping bag are definitely where I am paying a volume penalty and also a little bit on the weight as well. The PLUQ is...
Gideon, I've started doing that exact thing. I'm making a list of the items that I have and the weights, and also those that I'd like to replace them with and those weights. I found that if I...
I've been over my list, and while there may be some things that are excess, I don't really think I'm carrying egregiously too much stuff. Here is what I was carrying on my last trip (a 4-day outing...
I am frustrated with my pack size & weight.
I have totaled up the weight of my pack contents a number of times and even now that I have switched to carrying a WBBB and DIY hex tarp instead of a...
That is exactly what I plan to do as well. Thanks again for the help everyone.
That looks like it! I'll give it a try. Thank you.
I've seen loops tied with this knot and then those loops used to tie prusik knots (as in the link below), but I cannot figure out how to tie that first loop knot.
Am I confusing anyone? Basically...
Yeah, I am thinking about switching to running my ridgeline over the tarp too.
I know the ridgeline under the tarp gives it a little more stability in snow, but for the rest of the year, I think I...
The thought just occurred to me, as I am preparing to do a trip in potentially windy weather, if the coatings on ridgelines hurt either the tarp itself or at least the seam sealing when the wind is...
Shug (or anyone else), are you running shock cord through all four of those channels, or just at the head and foot of the UQ with some sort of static cord to attach it to your hammock suspension?
...
Thanks! I am learning how difficult it is to sew grosgrain ribbon over the edges once it's been cut. That batting likes to expand once it's been freed!
Thanks. I was not planning on adding any other insulation such as Insultex, etc. I was just going to sew up a PLUQ as a warm-weather option until I am able to buy or make a down filled UQ. Since...
Question here, Dejoha's instructions say to make pleats/darts in the ends of the PLUQ when sewing, but has anyone tried NOT doing this, and using a full tube of grosgrain and shock cord to gather...
Thanks to everyone for the tips and explanation. It's been very helpful. Also, for those who may have this same question in the future, I also found a brief video segment about the use of the...
HAHA! I believe it! I already don't want to look at it again, and I haven't even sewn it yet. :)
Pag, I hadn't even thought of making cuts to ease the curve. I'll give this a try and see how...
I am trying to avoid adding the extra weight of binding tape or grosgrain ribbon to finish off the bottom edges of a DIY silnylon tarp with cat cut edges.
The problem is with it being a cat cut,...
I am curious who out there is using a figure-9 to rig up their tarp? I've seen lots of illustration of the prusik method, including Shug's videos on Youtube, but I haven't seen how it is done with a...
If folks don't mind, I've got some more questions about making this particular hammock in a 9 ft. version (I'm 5'10" and 175 lbs)
1. Is the 108" ridgeline a flat/comfortable lay? It's less than...
Hey, quick question here, as I am planning to make one of these in the next few weeks: on the 9 ft. version, the bugnet length is 108". Does that mean that my ridgeline HAS to be 108" as well? I've...
40 feet?! Were you spanning a river? :)
So for a 6' whoopie sling, how much Amsteel do you start with?
That's a nice setup! I'm still having some trouble with my bugnet sagging a bit in my face. Does your design have any issues with this?
I wish I'd been back to HF more regularly and seen this earlier. I would have loved to go, but now have things planned for the weekend already. I'm hoping to get out and get more experience in snow...
Great idea! Nice work.
Thanks for the suggestions. I will play around more with the ridgeline before adding the bugnet to see if I can fine tune it more.
The fabric came from Scott at Backwoods Daydream. He has great...
So a footbox is just a big triangle added to one side where your feet go? That helps get a flatter sleep? How big a triangle piece do you need?
Really nice looking job. I am about to put the big net and zipper onto my hammock and am very nervous about the whole endeavor. Any tips?
Did you sew the zipper onto the hammock first, or onto...
Well, I got the chance this weekend to take it outside and really lay in it for a while. I'm not sure I am sold on this just yet. I figured with the hammock being 11 feet long, I would be able to...
Well, half an inch per baffle over 8 baffles is 4 inches overall, which is a pretty decent difference. I bet that snugs up really nice under the hammock.
This is going to be my next project after...
Much further north here, sorry. Maybe we can get a VA hang set up to help you out.
Nice looking UQ!
How much of a size difference was there between the top and bottom pieces of nylon?
Nice UQ. How many layers of the IX did you use?
Is something up with the OWFINC website? I've not been able to see the fabric listings over the past few days. I get yellow error boxes instead.
I would guess that it would be too short for a camping hammock.
Does anyone ever worry about hunters in areas where they camp? For that reason, would it make sense to have a bright color hammock/tarp?
I think those reinforcements might give you some trouble. Once you have weight in th hammock, therefore creating tension, you might end up feeling like you are laying in a giant cargo net.
Thanks Shug!
Ok, who has opinions on color? I know there are many fans of camo--I am too--but I am wondering if something like blaze orange might be a better idea? Not only might I run into...
Hey, thanks Shug!
It was your tarp I sorta' had in mind to make after I'd watched your tarp videos. What are the dimensions of that particular tarp?
Good suggestion on the scale models. I know I have some graph paper around here somewhere...
I am wondering if I should sew the doors on separately, or cut the fabric with the doors included?
Ok, so I am trying to figure out what size doors I will need to provide adequate coverage on the ends of a tarp--both of which will be DIYed once I figure out the size of the tarp.
This will be...
Shug, great video! Did you use any particular tutorial/design/pattern for your Frankenquilt, or was that completely a Shug design?
Also, out of curiosity, what's that thermometer you use in your...
So then I guess the question is with a down quilt, is snugness accomplished with the design of the quilt, or with how its rigged to the hammock?
I should look into this; my dog sheds like crazy--especially this time of year!
Nice job! What pattern did you use for the UQ?
Thanks DD! Yeah, it took me a few tries to get the monkey fist knots looking good. My first attempts looked like trash. Also, that cord wasn't the most flexible stuff to work with.
When the...
Those look pretty good. What did you use to stuff the pillow?
