I frequently bring my dog in the hammock (150lb + 90lb) with no problems. Sharp claws can be a bit worrisome, though. Otherwise, I put my sack under the hammock, and tie the dog to that. He could...

Thanks for the demo, gmcttr!
Outandback, preload was where I calculated this set-up would be impossible, because even at infinite pre-load, the stretch would be too much. The big problem is that...
Outandback, I am using the formulas in a statics textbook that engineers use to build suspension bridges. You break each force down into component vectors and follow the forces through to the ground...
I re-did the math just now. By my numbers, it's 150 lb tension on the hammock, 630.2 lb tension on the ridge-line, 669.3 lb tension on the main line, and 1,343 Lb horizontally on the tree.
That's...
I'm working on the force calculations still. Statics isn't super intuitive so I gotta break out the book. I think it's considerably less than what you think, though. Let me do the math, and then we...

I had this idea for a suspension system the other day. It's just a 120' adjustable continuous loop of 7/64 or 1/8 amsteel blue. Maybe someone else has already done it?
Here's the two bits...
$40 Chinook Hammocks online. Be quick, they go out of stock fast!
Just bought mine here http://ineedmoregear.com/chinook-tarp-12-x-9-5-green-11015
I'd love to but I'll be busy hanging in Costa Rica in November!
Stumbled across these today on my own while looking for an affordable yet quality tarp. These have great reviews and I bought one. Guess I just happened to find em when they came back in stock.

Thanks for the input lori. I've decided to go with a PU coated poly tarp instead. At $40, 9x12, it may not be DIY, but it certainly is a steal. The extra 1.5 pounds isn't going to break my back,...
What :scared: Membership required? And shipping? Price just goes up and u0p. Anyone know if any american companies sell a similar tarp?
EDIT: Chinook seems to make something similar, can be bought...
By not using a down sleeping bag.
Well, the issue that I'm running into is cost. A tarp of some sort is the last thing I need to complete my gear but I can't justify spending another $150 on one....
It's meant for canoeing, but it is roughly 9x12'. It's urethane coated polyester so compared to silnylon it should be more waterproof but not as wear resistant?
It's 2x as heavy as the hennessy...
I still like this idea because it's ultralight and the sock could double as a bivy, allowing one to go to ground if necessary. Last night we had wind gusts that were tearing apart oaks! I wouldn't...
I first got the idea for a hammock sock/bivy from this site
http://www.tothewoods.net/HammockCampingDry.html#Bivy
I don't mean to be a noob!
Edit: Sorry, double post.
Well now I'm a bit confused. Ground campers can use a bivy shelter to protect from the elements. What is stopping a similar design that wraps around a hammock?

Does a sock offer more warmth and weather protection than a tarp? It seems like it should, but the lack of tie-outs makes me wonder how much fun it is in the wind. I'm planning on 4 seasons...
