I demonstrate that technique on one of my We Don't Sew vids. I think it is the one "making it your own" or something like that.

Buttonholes can be extraordinary frustrating particularly on an older machine without the "automatic" button hole feature. You are in good company there.

In regards to the slit in the cord...
