I wish I could make it again this year but I have to work Sunday. Last year was fun despite the wind chill, snow fall, and intestinal issues. Hopefully next year and will definitely do a couple hangs...
I'm hoping to be there by 1. I may be a couple minutes late
I gripe good naturedly. We might get cold but at least we'll be outside and enjoy some good company
Got mine down to 39.6. I wish it was less
Apparently we have some rain and snow to look forward to tomorrow nite unless we are lucky enough to be up high enough to be above it (not holding my breath)
Yep. Only need my parka instead of all my Arctic gear lol
Intellicast is now up to a balmy 14 :D
I guess if someone wants to break in and steal a couple of mres and a gallon of water than they must need it more than me
Does anyone have an opinion on leaving some stuff in the car at Carver's and only taking necessary food and water up to RHK and then top off on the way thru Saturday?
I know what u mean about cold. I got stuck out overnite during blizzard of 93 and was only wearing shorts and tshirt (it was 70 that morning) so I know what you mean about cold. Of course my MSS bag...
Some balloons would take some of the weight off. Wonder if its too late to hire a sherpa lol
Just weighed my pack. With food and water: 45 lbs. Ugh.
Never too late to join. Tell these guys what you got and they'll let you know how well it'll probably work
I'll be there. I may possibly have to bail Saturday because of a last minute work thing but we'll see. But I will definitely be there tomorrow and overnite at RHK
Good idea. I'm sure I'll be asking loads of advice once we're up there too
I keep an extra poncho to keep moisture off the bottom and block wind so maybe
Skeeter beeter pro
Got the grand trunk Skeeter beeter pro. I could probably bring another sleeping bag to put underneath but my pack weight is getting absurd
Military modular sleep system, thermarest self inflating pad, and poncho liner as an underquilt plus assorted usual winter clothing
I've already prepared for the fact I'm going to freeze. I have a feeling my setup is gonna be inadequate but it'll definitely be a learning experience :D
Cool deal. I'll be there by 1 and be driving an '87 gray full size Blazer. Since I'm a new guy that might be easier to spot me than say average height and build lol
That's fine with me. Where do we wanna meet?
I live in JC and plan on rolling thru Roan Mtn around 1130-12. PM me ur number and where u want to meet if u want
What time will u be ready?
Yep it is. The 10th I think
I plan to be at the parking area at Carver's Gap right around noon Fri hopefully. Is that where everyone else is planning to park? And what about return trip Sunday?
Originally someone suggested hiking northbound to Overmountain Shelter and then hiking out to some cars but I haven't heard of anything concrete
Anyone planning on parking at Carver's Gap and staying at RHK shelter Fri nite? (Depending on weather of course)
When are those? I did a search and didn't come up with anything.
I'm gonna look at the area and figure out everything. Probably since you have a motorcycle we can just meet in linville falls and go from there. Anyone know where he could park his ride or has a...
Checked schedule and I am available weekend of Feb 25th. Let me know if u still want to. I can be up there Fri or we can shoot for Saturday
If my schedule is free one of those two weekends and you can get up to the general area we'll get it worked out. Anyone else possibly interested as well? Open call to all
Great thanks for info! I haven't been up in That area since I was a kid so good to know
Let me check my schedule and see. Another issue may be the roads up there. From my understanding they're pretty crazy this time of year even with 4wd
I'm down for weekends anytime just about
National forest so it should be fine to anywhere unless pisgah has some special rules which I can't find
Hate quoting myself lol. Starting point is approx 35.9122, -82.78872
How about Tanyard Gap (due east of hot springs on 25) to Rich mtn? Its about 3.3 miles to top. A little steep but great views
There's lotsa good places on the AT up here in tri cities as well and only a little over an hour from you. I know quite a few good hang sites
I like the location you picked and the panther creek idea that way those that wanna paddle can do so back east to the location and those who aren't so inclined can also access the site easily as...
So basically as long as we stay in the north and west of that whole peninsula we should be good
I'm in for those dates. BTW does that map mean the spot is TVA? Wasn't quite sure what it meant
This might work. Non paddlers could always share some canoe space if someone's bringing one (unless they don't like being on the water which I understand b/c of my wife). If so there's always options
Is there good access to launch a canoe or kayak from that access site?
I'm good for anytime in April from 15th on or before the 6th
Like what I see. I bet its a great spot
Hows the parking situation there? What kinda timeframe are we looking at?
Jammer
I know. My kayak is looking pretty sad just hanging in my shed :D
That sounds good. I've been wanting to do that for a while. Watagua lake has a few good islands as well
My schedule is pretty flexible so maybe the 20th-23rd or so
